Overall, this experiment consisted of over seven parts however, because of the amount of time given in summer lab we had to save time and cut some days out. We were able to do this by being given our own Salicylic acid (SA) prepared for us instead of having to used wintergreen to make it and recrystallize it. In addition, we skipped the qualitative test of our purity for SA and Aspirin (ASA). The first part of this experiment is the preparation of ASA from SA were, we prepared our aspirin from the collected salicylic acid. A screw-capped vial was weighed empty to 29.7416 grams and filled with SA. The mass recorded of SA was 1.3995 grams of SA and it was weighed and transferred to a 125 mL flask. Then 3.05 mL of acetic anhydride was added to wash down the crystals. The flask was then covered with a stopper. The 125 mL flask was placed in an 800 mL beaker that contained 250 mL of water. A thermometer was placed into the beaker and the temperature was regulated. The water was heated until it was within the range of 85-90. It was gently heated for an additional five minutes. Placed 2 mL of DI water into the flask once the burner was turned off. Once the flask cooled down, 20 mL of DI water was added. Crystals formed and solution turned a milky color. 10 mL of DI water were added once crystals appeared. It was placed in an ice bath and a test tube of 15 mL of DI water was also chilled. To titrate the SA, about 0.10 grams of SA was obtained in a 125 mL flask and about 15 mL of 95% ethanol. In addition, about 20 mL of DI water was added and swirled around into the flask as well about 3-4 drops of an indicator was added to solution.
