An Honorable Sacrifice
Sacrifice can be an honorable death and death can be an honorable sacrifice. Pearson seemed to have envisioned this when developing Mother. Mother has sacrificed a lifetime to her children and husband, resulting in a negative outcome. Her identity has changed so dramatically that she is no longer mentioned by name but by her role in the house. Her family has stricken her of self-worth and she rationalizes with it. “It’ll be hard…when I go” This line carries the underlining result of an altruistic life, the continuous instinct to care. Even in her final moments she feels genuine pity for them. Those who she cared for will now have to live independently from her support. The dying of the mother is parallel to the red dress. They both expose

In the book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, both Henrietta and her daughter Deborah achieve immortality through the people they have both saved, through the book itself, and through the different visual media they have managed to record. Both Henrietta and Deborah saved people in their own way. For example, Deborah inspired her grandson Devon to “go to college and continue learning about Henrietta until he knew everything there was to know about her” therefore saving him from a life without education, while Henrietta inadvertently helped lead scientists to a possible cure for HIV. Although Henrietta made a more global impact, both mother and daughter have no doubt been immortalized through the people…

In the movie, there were several characters whom have made significant sacrifices for a greater good. The pastor devoted his whole life to creating his own congregation. Similarly, the two sisters were devoted to their father and their congregation. As a result, they devoted their entire lives to the benefit of others rather than for themselves. Lorens sacrificed the person whom he loved (one of the sisters) in order to finish pursuing his dream of attaining material wealth. And finally, Babette gave the ultimate sacrifice at the end of the movie. Growing up surrounded by chefs it only made me realize how great a sacrifice Babette was making by giving up her life in Paris. As a renowned chef, one whose meals were praised by the wealthy, having to give up that life and instead live a poorer one (monetary wise), was very…

At the same time it explains that he is going through a different grieving process, trying to convince himself that she had a decent life. He doesn't weep the entire time, he uses a strong, powerful voice to deliver his speech. He uses a proud voice when speaking of Diana's good nature, "Diana was the very essence of compassion, of duty, of style, of beauty. All over the world she was a symbol of selfless humanity." He acknowledges the positives of her with pride because that was his sister, he is proud of what she was and knows that her mark on the world will be considered the same. The Earl was also grateful for her, "...she had not changed at all from the big sister that mothered me as a baby, fought with me at school and endured those long train journeys between our parents' homes with me at weekends." This helps share to the world that she was not always the one who needed help and instead she would help The Earl throughout his childhood, that he never felt abandoned from her. He uses these anecdotes and examples to console those who are in a great deal of pain over her death, it shows that she was a selfless and amazing person through her…

Death in any aspect is not to be taken lightly or brushed off, and often depicts and defines a main theme or message in a novel, especially the Death of John’s mother, more simply defined as a symbol of idealized motherhood and womanhood. The death of john's mom helps to illuminate the meaning of the work as a whole by establishing Owen's ideas and beliefs about death, by the loss of innocence and moral conflicts that comes along with witnessing death and, by disrupting the previous “balance” john had in his life, forcing him to seek out a path of looking upon someone else, besides his mother, for wisdom and guidance.…

    Honor and Courage

The honor is honesty, fairness, or integrity in one's beliefs and actions; and the courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face life difficulties. This two values depends one to the other and in difficult situations you have to have courage to defend your honor and the good values that you have. For this reason Honor and courage are basic on human lives and it is imperative to teach these values and give them the most importance. Both of the two values represent who we are and how brave we are to confront life difficulties; but I ask to myself did these values have to be sacrificed to be accepted or to make us look better?…

One point also worth mentioning is that from the point of view of the reader, the sacrifice and its turning futile is what gains his attention the most. But from the point of view of the characters in the story, namely James and Della, their love for each other gains their importance the most. The sacrifice doesn’t hold any importance except conveying happiness to the person they love, and thus they don't hesitate much in doing it. Della just “faltered for a minute… tear or two splashed”. But she had “Eyes shining brilliantly”“… with the brilliant sparkle still in her eyes she fluttered” to sell her hair. Also, at the time of the sacrifice, she did not think of herself, but only of James and…

Personal sacrifice is not an obscure idea; it is power held within the majestic bodies of life. It is a compelling notion which has shaped the world microscopically where no eye could see. It is a grand gesture, yet it is the simplest of means. It is a burning passion of repetitive hatredness and love. It is fire with the power to spread and flourish as well as burn and eradicate. The bond secured is invincible. Personal sacrifice is vital to the society presented today. It may not be seen by the eye, but it is felt everywhere. Individuals are acquired to sacrifice a piece of their joy, happiness, and comfort to others; it is an involuntary action which proceeds in a revolution. Personal sacrifice is necessary for immense change, particularly,…

    Sacrifice

Sacrifice, as defined by Webster’s dictionary, (Merriam-Webster.com) is an act of offering to a deity something precious OR destruction/surrender of something for the sake of something else. I prefer the second definition. The Old Testament of the Bible spends a good amount of time referring to and governing ritual sacrifice. I feel like the importance placed on sacrifice in the Old Testament can confuse the true and real reason behind it, which is to repent and dedicate our life to God. Sacrifice as a ritual can very easily become common place, by simply going through the motions, versus my idea of sacrifice, which is living the sacrifice like Jesus did His whole life. From my own study of the bible, I noticed that the act of sacrificing took precedence over living a sacrificial life. I feel that is the modern day equivalent of going to mass, but not living the mass the rest of the week. This is why I like the second definition. The idea of surrendering something for the sake of something else is what I learned growing up catholic as the definition of sacrifice. Something as simple as spending time (surrendering time) in prayer or praise of God (for someone else-God) would be a sufficient sacrifice for God. To understand sacrifice in the Bible I believe the most important thing to study is what sacrifice is NOT. Then it is necessary to think about what God wanted from sacrifice and finally look into the ultimate sacrifice, which was Jesus’ life.…

If you wish to save the last of your dignity, do not call your best actions a “sacrifice”: that term brands you as immoral. If a mother buys food for her hungry child rather than a hat for herself, it is not a sacrifice: she values the child higher than the hat; but it is a sacrifice to the kind of mother whose higher value is the hat, who would prefer her child to starve and feeds him…

Sacrifice is one of the recurring themes in the Bible. New forms of sacrifice and new interpretations of its meaning mixed with old ideas seem to reflect the changes in the understanding of sacrifice. This paper attempts to know more concretely the reason for animal sacrifice. Could not the bond between God and humankind be represented in another ritual form? This study is expected to shed light on the relevance of sacrifice for social harmony I have selected the understanding of sacrifice in the Old Testament or the New Testament or Hinduism and folk religion for this study.…

It is something everyone wants, not many have, and few want to give. Some people would appreciate having a little bit of respect from others, and some should make efforts to show some more respect. Unfortunately, this does not happen all the time. Maybe this is because respect is not clearly understood. What is respect? The dictionary defines it as an act of giving particular attention or high or special regard. Another definition shows respect as a feeling or attitude of admiration and deference toward somebody or something. This does not explain completely what it is, but at least it gives us an idea about what it may be. As a matter of fact, there are many forms of respect.…
