Introduction
The topic I have chosen for my research paper is the Analysis of business and financial performance of Tesco plc for three consecutive years. TESCO PLC is a super market giant in United Kingdom retail industry and has earned its name over the years since its inception. This research paper aims to evaluate the company’s overall financial and business activities during the year 2009-2011.

Reasons for choosing the topic
In the time when recession was taking its toll, Tesco plc successfully managed to run its various businesses given a very competitive retail market. The inspiration in choosing Tesco plc for my research comes from my work experience with the company for over a year. Being an employee of the Tesco Group and a chartered accountancy student, I have always been keen in assessing business and financial factors that has kept the company going over the years. Moreover, I am pursuing the core examinations of ACCA at present in which Corporate and Financial Reporting and Business Analysis are imperative elements of those subjects. Tesco’s is one of the largest supermarket stores around the world; it has 330,000 staff working in 3,146 stores, there are stores located in China, Turkey and Japan. Research shows that they have stores in 9 other different countries and 27 million people outside of the UK own their own club card to receive offers and discounts from Tesco’s. They sell a range of different products to suit customer’s needs. The products range from food and groceries, their own clothing brand F&F, their own mobile phone network, and also have personal banking. Tesco’s are all about making their customers happy by offering them services which can be very useful, including bank loans. There slogan ‘Every little helps’ is not just a slogan but is one of their aims, they want to make sure all products that they sell are at a reasonable price to meet customer’s needs.…

Our class was assigned a company for financial scrutiny and to obtain financial statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement), from the company’s most recent Annual Report. We are to prepare a written analysis of the organization with the following requirements: 1) describing the product or service marketed by the company; 2) evaluate the company in terms of the financial ratios we believe are most helpful in understanding the company’s performance; and 3) include a financial forecast for the said company for the next 2-3 years. We were asked to include an estimate of the company’s prospects for the company industry for the years ahead. Finally, the students were asked to give an oral presentation to the class using this information. I choose to do my analysis of a company called Chuck E. Cheese’s. This paper will explain what I’ve learned about the financial statement analysis categories.…

Another reason I have decided to draw comparisons between these organisations is because I have always wondered how Tesco Plc made it to the top of the retail market and how they managed to surpass all competition along the way, such as J Sainsbury Plc.…
