Chapter I The Problem and Its Background

Introduction
In the Filipino culture, families live together in the same house. The parents, together with their children, together with their other relatives maintain a close family bonding. Because of this, the house is a place for nurturing children, a place wherein they can be safe from any harm and pollution. Filipinos are also dependent in the environment. Filipino children loves playing in the playground, loves to swim in the river and to climb a tree. Therefore, the environment should always be clean, clean from any dust or dirt, clean from any foul odours that gives discomfort to the family and especially clean from any pollution. Having a clean environment is important because our health is directly depends on the health of our environment. It is essential for us to know the importance of environment in our life. Any kind of pollution which is causing damage to environment is equally bad for whole humanity. Today air pollution increases the risk of various kind of respiratory illness such as allergies, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lung cancer. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to the health effects of ozone, fine particles, and other airborne toxicants. Today, we see a slight awareness in masses about increasing pollution levels and therefore, we are seeing some actions from all wakes of life; however, still lots of work is required to be done by all of us to have a clean and healthy environment. Non-biodegradable material is Long-term exposure to air, light and water can cause synthetic materials like plastic to emit toxic pollutants. Plastics, which are petroleum-

based, contain toxins that can leach into water supplies. The study Environmental Working Group showed that low doses of Bisphenol A--a chemical used in water bottles, food containers and hard plastics--leach into foods and water over time and are carcinogenic, cause insulin resistance and interfere
