ARRANGED MARRIAGES A THING OF THE PAST – DO YOU AGREE?

Marriage is a legal union of man and wife. In this day and age there are two different ideas of marriage. The first being a marriage based on love and the second being a marriage arranged by a third party. The arranged marriage is a contract between families, but not between individuals. On the other hand, a love marriage is a union of two individuals based upon mutual love, affection, commitment and attraction. The big question is - In our modern day age, are arranged marriages a thing of the past or are they just as relevant today as they were in the past?
In my personal point of view I totally agree that arranged marriages is a thing of the past but disagree on the issue of an arranged marriage being superior to a love marriage. In modern day society people are exposed to much more than what people of the past have being exposed to. Therefore arranged marriages hardly ever take place in today’s times.
Love marriages are prevalent in almost all the societies of South Africa, given the fact that they are still considered inferior to the weddings arranged by many parents in the country. In societies with reduced mobility, (predominantly non-western cultures) arranged marriages are common as love is expected to grow due to the fact that it is not seen as necessary for marriage. Arranged marriages seem to work well and make good sense as divorce rates are low and Epstein (2002) found that perhaps about half of them report that they have fallen in love with each other.…

I knew that arranged marriage was prevalent, but not to the extent that the article explains. A particular concept I found interesting was that unarranged marriages created through love, or “love match” have their own name and unique distinction; a very good friend of mine was born in India and frequently expresses the pride he has from his parents being married by love and not by arrangement. This article encouraged me to open my mind and realize how different cultures can be. For example, instead of just expecting food, dress, and language to vary as culture varies, it is important to remind myself that everyday components of the Western culture I know can be very different elsewhere—and that the differences are…

Marriage has been considered by many to be a sacred practice for hundreds of years. However, the ideals surrounding these unions have shifted from the medieval 1300s to the modern day 2016. Marriages today are revolved around the couple's feelings for each other and the financial and social aspects are irrelevant in most cases. The marriages in 2016 are quite an improvement over the unions of the 1300s which were often more centered around social and monetary gain than the couple's actual feelings and happiness.…

In western society of course, arranged marriages are often looked down upon as being “Old fashioned” or out of date. In the past, marriage was less about love, and more about the union of the two individuals’ families. It was a social and economic necessity, the details of which are agreed by the families of the bride and groom rather than baked on love. On the other hand Western Civilization has made love in marriage the main factor. Because of the benefits that it has on the family, the future of the married couple, and the stability and advantages of them, I think that arranged marriage is a better choice over dating.…

They are better described as well aged traditions, rather than antiquated. Regardless of these erroneous beliefs, arranged marriages are changing to better suit the current time period. These changes involve adding prohibitions, on things like dowries, and minimizing the importance of caste (Marriage). Some might argue that arranged marriages leave people closed minded and, regardless of the benefits, belittle the children involved. Contrary to this belief, most children approve of their parents choosing their spouses, because they believe that their parents are more knowledgeable and truly do know what is best for them (Traditional Arranged Marriages). Since the children understand and believe this fact, they are able to work with their parents in the process and their feelings and emotions are taken into consideration. If anything, the children are maturing and being propelled into adulthood because of the arranged marriage…

Divorce rates are lower in arranged marriages as compared to romantic love. This could be due to the idea that it is frowned upon by the families of either spouse due to the dishonor that is said to occur from a divorce, or the idea that after marriage, both people have learned to love one another or cope with each other. For example, romantic love is not always successful because the attraction or awe that once existed in the marriage is no longer there, which leads to unhappiness. “What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatible you are, but how you deal with incompatibility” (Leo Nikolaevich). Nikolaevich states that despite the differences that can result from an arranged marriage, there is still a chance to have a happy marriage as long as both spouses are able to focus on how to cope with each other and their differences. Instead of complaining about differences, look at what they have in common and what helps them get along with one another, and give time to learn to love each other or give each other mutual respect. Furthermore, given that not all marriages by choice end up successful, not all arranged marriages end up miserable and unsuccessful.…
