An Analysis Of 'Why Are All The Black Kids Sitting Together In The Cafeteria'
I read “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria” by Beverly Daniel Tatum and “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan. I choose both essays due to the fact that they were the first two in the prescribed reading of our text for this week. I have come to realize that I am just not attracted to any of our readings from our text, and just working my way through them seems to be working. I will say that each essay so far, has left me somewhat surprised, as far as gaining incites on issues and topics that I never would have received, if left to my own intentions. Again, I had no preconceived opinions on either essay, although I have witnessed firsthand the perceived biases that are placed on minority races throughout my life. I

The essay I choose to write about was Maya Angelou’s “Sister Flowers”. I believe that the purpose of this essay was to describe an important part of this person’s life that helped them to become a better writer/poet/reader and also describe what I think to be this persons mentor. This essay talks about how Mrs. Bertha Flowers decides to take Marguerite Henderson home with her to give her good books to read and to read her an excerpt form a book. I think it is a very well written and extremely descriptive essay, it makes you feel like you are there with them listening to the pages turning and almost taste the tea cookie or smell the vanilla from Mrs. Flower’s home.…

Understanding Why Black Kids Sit Together in the Cafeteria In her article “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?” Beverly Daniel Tatum argues the reason behind cafeteria separation throughout schools in America (P.376). One of the reasons she mentions is that students (primarily of the African American descent) are unsure of who they are, so they clique up with fellow classmates they feel they can relate to. Like students of the same racial background as them, or students who practice the same religion.…

The essay that I chose was Technoshamanism: Spiritual healing in the rave subculture. This essay was about how raves can be a spiritual experience to certain people. I thought that his article was very interesting as I am an anthropology student. I thought it was nice that he brought in other anthropologists that are experts in Shamanism to help him with this essay. The basic idea of this essay is that the main reason that people go to raves is because, these people that go to these raves believes that they have some sort of spiritual experience. I thought it was interesting how one man was recorded saying that when he went to a rave he became a puma and then an eagle. Much like the author was saying it is as if they are trying to emulate ancient tribal cultures like the Bushmen in Africa. The DJ acts as a Shaman, while the music acts as the drum beats that are used in rituals with the Bushmen in Africa. While, a lot of the spiritual encounters take place at Raves, are helped along with the drug called ecstasy, taking said drug is completely optional, and is not needed for a spiritual encounter to happen.…

According to the passage the A Tale of Segregation, william and his father had to wait to get water because, of the white men. The white men were holding them back because they were black. The white men where bullying them because of what they believed in, and what has happen in the past. The white men considered them as good men, compared to william and his father they claimed. Another event that shows white men think they have power over black, was the intensely racist governor in alabama. George wallace was standing in the doorway of a college, and wasn’t letting two black men get in. However the governors defiance was overwhelmed by John F. One part of the essay "On Keeping a Notebook" that was fascinating to me was to see how a child that was given a notebook to keep her busy grew up with a notebook always by her side not to document her thoughts but to keep a record of what she saw. Somewhat, like stories about other people's lives. Anoher particular part was very heartwarming in the essay "Working at Wendy's," Joel had put his pride to the side to take care of his family, not asking his wife to stop attending school but put his life on hold to work at a fast food resturant that his child's peers and their parents go to eat. Lastly, in the essay "Graduation " Angelo the fact that "colored" people went to school was supprise but to only have a few schools after Jr. High was…

When writing it’s important to connect with the topic; therefore, I read each article before making my decision. “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan was the article suggested by the Reading Selection Quiz, I could not connect with this article at all. I found “Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris uninteresting. Some Lessons From the Assembly Line” by Andrew Braaksma was intriguing and hit really close to home, so I decided it would be best for my critical analysis project.…

During my English comp summer session class, I was instructed to read several essays and give my feedback on them. In my opinion, the last three writings were probably the most memorable and important. “Hurricane Katrina”, a story on the immediate and after affects of Hurricane Katrina on the city of New Orleans, was first of these three stories. It focused on real life experiences of people who lived through it, victims giving their heartrending testimonies. “It’s Not Just A Bike”, is about Lacey Taylor and her tireless pursuit in her cause to help bring to a halt thieves stealing bikes from off her school campus. Another story I read was “Free The Children”. It gave constructive criticism to parents who would not generally let their children enjoy their summers out of school. These three compositions were the most significant and interesting to read.…

The essay “The 51-per-cent minority” by Doris Anderson is a deductive comparison between the treatment of different races, religion and women. Anderson seems to be well aware of what’s going on around her in terms of minorities and different sexes. The process of the essay is very clear in terms of argumentation. She seems to capture reader’s attention during the introduction when she uses irony. This could be considered hidden assumption because the reader is supposed to realize a bigger meaning than what’s actually in the essay. But the writing process does consist of some flaws, because Anderson doesn’t start with the main idea of the essay the readers might have to go back and re-read the essay to get their thoughts straight.…
