An Analysis of Segu by Maryse Conde

In the novel Segu, Maryse Conde beautifully constructs personal and in depth images of African history through the use of four main characters that depict the struggles and importance of family in what is now present day Mali. These four characters and also brothers, by the names of Tiekoro, Siga, Naba, and Malobali are faced with a world changing around their beloved city of Bambara with new customs of the Islamic religion and the developing ideas of European commerce and slave trade. These new expansions in Africa become stepping stones for the Troare brothers to face head on and they have brought both victory and heartache for them and their family. These four characters are centralized throughout this novel because they provide the reader with an inside account of what life is like during a time where traditional Africa begins to change due to the forceful injection of conquering settlers and religions. This creates a split between family members, a mixing of cultures, and the loss of one’s traditions in the Bambara society which is a reflection of the changes that occur in societies across the world. The novel immediately projects the fear and misunderstanding felt by the people of Bambara due to the unexpected early changes that are taking place in Africa. “A white man...There’s a white man on the bank of the Joliba” is exclaimed by Dousika’s pregnant wife Sira (Conde 5). The family is instantly struck with a curious mind but also one that is uneasy. The sight of this white man causes great despair already for the man of the house Dousika: “White men come and live in Segu among the Bambara? It seemed impossible, whether they were friends or enemies!”(Conde 10). The unexpected appearance of this white man marks the beginning of anguish for Dousika and his four sons, especially for Dousika at first for he is embarrassed by the council due to this stranger’s intrusion. This white

    Controversies and conflicts are many ways to emphasize key characters and plots in many novels. Authors such as, Maryse Conde use change and the effects of change, to help the reader better understand the underlying themes. In the novel Segu, Conde does just this.     The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano describes the life of a native African who was kidnapped from his homeland in the Eboe Province (which is now the Nigerian town of Isseke) at age eleven and thrown into the horrors of the African slave trade.     Ngugi wa Thiong’o’s Matagari catalogs the story of Matagari, Guthera, and Muriuki as they look for truth and justice across their country. During this journey the story highlights many Biblical allusions that play a major role in the story development and how Matagari, primarily, looks for truth and justice. In order to understand the text, the reader must first understand the basics of Christianity and the Bible.     “Some say that I was once uncommonly beautiful, but I wouldn’t wish beauty on any woman who has not her own freedom, and who chooses not the hands that claim her,” (Hill, 4). This quote signifies one of the many important messages that The Book of Negroes tries to convey. Lawrence Hill, the Canadian author who wrote this novel does a tremendous job to magnify an area of history that many of us have neglected over the years. He uses Aminata Diallo, as his main character who is abducted from her home in Bayo, West Africa. Aminata is taken away from her home when she is only eleven years old, and throughout the novel the readers are taken through her journey and watch her grow into an old woman who isn’t afraid to tell her story and speak her mind. She is very unique because she is both a static and dynamic character. During the course of her journey from Africa to slavery in the Western world, Aminata never stops believing that one day she will go back home. She always had the hope that her husband, Chekura, would come back for her and that she would reconnect with her daughter. Unfortunately, her religious beliefs take a blow during the hard times she faces in the US and in Nova Scotia after she loses her daughter May. She becomes a dynamic character when she says, “Daddy Moses asked if I was ready to let Jesus into my heart. I told him that I had faith when I was a young girl, that I had had to give it up, and that I wasn’t thirsting for another God in my life,” (350). This quote shows how at some point Aminata was about to give up and she just didn’t have any more fight left in her. With all the terrible things that had had happened in her life she started to lose her faith. Aminata is a very admirable character and she really signifies the struggles that not only people of colour faced at that time, but the pain and suffering that slave women had to endure during this horrible time that stains our history.
