An Analysis Of Jackson's Journey
On the early stages of Jackson’s journey, she receives aid from a supernatural figure. She sees this figure as a protective helper, and this figure gives aid to Jackson on her journey. Jackson, after crossing a log laid across a creek, thanks her protector for helping her avoid a challenge by saying “the good Lord made his snakes to curl up and sleep in the winter” (Welty 2). While the Lord as a protective figure does not give Jackson a physical protective device or amulet, she does receive faith, which is used to protect her from internal conflict on her journey. The Lord as Jackson’s helper protects her from facing a challenge with snakes and gives her faith throughout the remainder of her journey.
