How a Nigerian Applicant Should Prepare for an American Student Visa
The visa can be seen as ones ticket to a journey, a step forward to an adventure. The visa is issued at embassies of the desired country one wants to go to, however, the experience that comes with applying for and getting a visa can be quite unforgettable. In Nigeria, there are two United States embassies; one is located at the formal capital state of Lagos, while the other is located at the present capital city – Federal Capital Territory of Abuja. The opinions of the applicants – concerning which embassy gives the most difficult interview – differ. All in all, the United States

There are different kinds of visas for temporary visitors; this includes the B-1 visa is for athletes competing for prize money and also for business visitors, whereas the B-2 visa is pleasure visitors, tourists on a vacation. Other visas include the J, Q, F and M visas that can be quite confusing because their purpose are almost similar, especially the J and F visas; make no mistake to confuse them, however, as the J visa is for exchange visitors (including students, professors, teachers and au pair) while the F visa is for academic and vocational students. The student must also understand the obligations required of him/her and how they are to be met. These obligations, among many others, include: having a good financial standing and support (from a parent or guardian), receiving an acceptance letter and meeting all the requirements from the University the student applied and intends to go to and receiving a SEVIS (the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System, a web-accessible database used by the Homeland security to access information about the students. It is very important for applicants to pay the SEVIS fee at least one week prior to interview date, to allow for adequate processing …show more content…
After applying for the correct visa, he/she should pay for the visa; on the website, a page shows a list of the visa types and the correlating fees in both the U.S currency (dollar) and its equivalence in the native currency (naira). If paying online for the visa proves difficult, it is possible for the applicant to pay for the visa through participating banks. It is very important for the applicant to keep the receipt number in order to book a visa appointment. After that, the next step would be for him/her to fill out the DS-160 form. It is recommended that the applicant read the guidelines for completing the DS-160 form, and every information should be inputted carefully because no changes can be made once it is submitted. If filling the form proves to be difficult, assistance should be sought from a parent/guardian, a lawyer or a

The country of Nigeria is located in Western Africa bordering the Gulf of Guinea (Bureau of African Affairs, 2011). The Cultural interview discussed in this paper was conducted on a 33 year old man who migrated to the United States of America from Nigeria 4 years ago. “Nigeria has over 50 languages and over 250 dialects and ethnic groups” (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). The three largest groups are the Hausa-Fulani, the Igbo, and the Yoruba. Nigeria music is mostly folk-like. It is very popular worldwide due to the unique instruments played such as the gongon drums (Faola & Heaton, 2008). The person I interviewed is a coworker of mine. Our interview took place in Taco Bell in Willoughby, Ohio, November 20th at 11 A.M. We spoke for about 1 hour and 40 minutes. During our interview I asked questions about the standards of living in Nigeria, and cultural beliefs and practices. I also asked individual questions about personal life and perceptions about Nigerian and American culture.…

Who is considered an American? What does mean to be an American? It is perhaps unsurprising that the traits Americans like to ascribe to themselves are somewhat different from those that foreigners tend to ascribe to them. Indeed, if you ask an American to describe his fellow citizens, he is likely to tell you that they are affable, hardworking and patriotic people; but if you ask some foreign commentators or observers such as a prominent photographer from Switzerland, Robert Frank, he will have a different point of view towards the idea of an American.…

    A Bohemian Immigrant

I strongly believe that Antonia would agree with this definition simply because she is a Bohemian immigrant. What I mean by this is that coming from what she came from, she sees that her parents made nothing in to something. They moved from their country to re locate in Nebraska for a more opportunity filled life. Therefore, she does believe that to be dissolved into something complete and great, you just need to put forth the effort. And it will come as naturally as sleep!…

Finally, the main difference and major contribution to Native-born fears was the willpower of the “New Immigrants” to preserve their culture regardless of the costs. Although the “Old Immigrants” also tried to keep their culture alive, they did this in a very minimalistic way in comparison to the restaurants, social clubs, and more that the “New Immigrants” created in an attempt to preserve their culture. This also was faced with opposition especially by antiforeign organizations such as the “American Protective Association” or APA who made every effort to prevent Roman Catholic from taking office and even suppressed the faith by depicting their nuns in “lustful fantasies.” Besides degrading the culture of the new individuals who had come to America, the Native-born also developed organized labor which emphasized the language barrier of the “New Immigrants” as a means to protect American workers and their jobs from the “inferior.” Organized Labor was not the only tactic to…

In the beginning, the Europeans that immigrated to America often did so because of one of two things; religious reasons or economic opportunity. They brought new ideas and new religions to the Americas. The Quaker Colonies of Pennsylvania and Massachusetts were formed by English Protestants who wanted a place where they could worship their religion in peace, with social order. These people looked to America for asylum.…

Immediately after reading this quote, all I could visualize was the discomfort and hard work my dad has consumed. Although he wasn’t born in America, the dedication he has accomplished to reach the American Dream has been a journey I have witnessed. My favorite childhood memory was when he was granted his American citizenship, it was then I realized it does not matter who you are or where you come from. This quote does not only…
