An Air Traffic Control Tower (Photo by Fred Mabonga) In many countries the pilot in command of the flight is the final authority for the safe operation of the aircraft. The pilot may, in an emergency situation, deviate from ATC instructions to the extent required to deal with the situation. This is carried as the pilot’s best professional consideration in view of the current emergency situation. In some instances it could be a split second decision in order to save the situation for the safety of the passengers and crew.

In the corporate business world an organisation may own an aircraft for the transportation of their employees in order to improve on the speed of doing business and aimed at making the organisation more efficient and more profitable.
Another aviation sector for those who can afford it is the recreation sector such as for air competitions and displays of skills.
The aircraft can also be used for the transportation of cargo/freight. This air cargo transportation is the main means of transporting perishable goods to distant destinations across the world. An example is the business of the export of fresh flowers from Africa to Europe. This is made possible by air transportation in order to reach the destination faster while still fresh. The achievement of a good safety record can add to good reputation, and for those in commercial operation increased business, as your customers become aware that they are safe in your hands. This means that you put safety considerations first.

The way to achieve a total safety concept begins with the training of personnel to ensure compliance with the safety program.
It is therefore reasonable to argue that training and a good safety record can yield rewards. Sometimes it appears trivial or even monotonous as aviation safety is emphasised repeatedly.
But when you consider the consequences of ignoring safety you realise that it is well worth even enjoying adherence to safety procedures. An organisation will do well to instill in their personnel to enjoy safety practices.

There are so many reports of incidents and accidents in the aviation industry that could have been avoided. In fact they are too many to enumerate here. In some airline aircraft accidents no one survived, not even the airline! It would however suffice to say, on a consolation note, that despite all the horrors and gruesome scenes of air aircraft incidents and accidents, at least through incident/accident reports we have had the opportunity to prevent them from happening again.
