Amir's Character Development in The Kite Runner
Amir – character development

Describe in detail the THREE most important things which happen to Amir which cause him to change his attitude to life. Find quotation and detail from the text to support your argument.

I think that the three most important events in the book that effect Amir’s character is..
1) When he watches Assef rape Hassan. This while it does not effect Amirs’s character in a positive way, still has a profound effect on him. He is wracked with guilt that haunts him though his life. It is a ‘metaphorical demon’ that he must face.

After allowing Hassan to be raped, Amir is not any happier. On the contrary, his guilt is relentless, and he recognizes his selfishness cost him his happiness rather than increasing it.

“That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty-six years.”

To the reader, the quotation functions as a teaser. It piques the reader’s interest without revealing exactly what Amir is talking about, and from the time period Amir mentions, twenty-six years, the reader gets an idea of just how important this moment was. As the story unfolds, we realize that the deserted alley Amir refers to is where Hassan was raped, and that this event has largely defined the course of Amir’s life since. This is what Amir means when he says that the past continues to claw its way out. Try as he might to bury it, he was unable to because his feelings of guilt kept arising. As a result, he figuratively continues peeking into the alley where Assef raped Hassan, literally meaning that he keeps going over the event in his mind.

“I actually aspired to cowardice, because the alternative, the real reason I was running, was that Assef was right: Nothing was free in this world. Maybe Hassan was the price I had to pay, the lamb I had to slay, to win Baba.”

When Amir says this, toward the end of Chapter 7, he has just watched Assef rape Hassan, and rather than intervene, he ran away. Amir says he aspired to cowardice because, in his estimation, what he did was worse than cowardice. If fear of being hurt by Assef were the main reason he ran, Amir suggests that at least would have been more justified. Instead, he allowed the rape to happen because he wanted the blue kite, which he thought would prove to Baba that he was a winner like him, earning him Baba’s love and approval. The price of the kite, as Amir says, was Hassan, and this is why Amir calls Hassan the lamb he had to slay. He draws a comparison between Hassan and the lamb sacrificed during the Muslim holiday of Eid Al-Adha to commemorate Abraham’s near sacrifice of his son to God. In…

After years of misguidance, Amir realizes that on the road to friendship and loyalty, one must be able to stand up for what they believe in, something many are too afraid to do. When they were young, Amir and Hassan, Amir's slave, were confronted by the neighborhood bully, Assef. They happened to be in a remote location. Afraid of being hurt, Amir wondered if anyone would be able to hear his scream. “'Just let us go Assef,' I said, hating the way my voice trembled”(Hosseini 41). If not for the lethal threat of Hassan's slingshot, Assef might not have left without giving them a beating. This event portrays one of Amir's weaknesses, which contrasts his adult persona. It shows how he thinks about himself in situations that threaten his well being. A strong person would not have assumed that the only option was to admit defeat. Hassan managed to put aside his fears to overcome Assef's superiority; which was the opposite of Amir. Amir's weakness did not go unnoticed in his daily life. Baba, Amir's father, was able to see this in him: “A boy who can't stand up for himself becomes a man who can't stand up for anything”(22). Baba's statement is not so much of a fact as it is a challenge. He does not believe that Amir will ever change, but there is never a way to be absolutely sure of what the future holds. The encounter with Assef was only a stepping stone on the road to learning what it means to be a true friend. Amir…

Amir has a sudden realization, or epiphany, when he says, "I became who I am today at the age of 12." (Hosseni 17). Amir made many mistakes growing up, including lying to his father and not doing the right thing when his friend Hassan was raped. Hassan, too embarrassed and ashamed to say anything, relied on his only friend to do the right thing and tell Baba what he witnessed. Amir vividly remembers the moment Hassan was raped, and he didn't try to help. Amir has a flashback on page 18 when he tells us, "I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek." (Hosseni 18). The detail that Amir gives the reader, shows that he vividly remembers the incident. Amir's quality of friendship is shown in this situation. The flashback and epiphany of the rate both remind the audience of the wrongdoings of…

What was so funny was that, for the first time since the winter of 1975, I felt at peace. I laughed because I saw that, in some hidden nook in the corner of my mind, I’d even been looking forward to this… My body was broken – just how badly I wouldn’t find out until later – but I felt healed” (Hosseini 289) This scene depicts the acceptance that Amir finally faces. After Amir witnesses the rape of Hassan, he can’t stand being with him let alone looking at him. It only reminds him of what happened and how he stood by and did nothing about it. In order to stop himself from feeling bad he frames Hassan with a theft so that him and Ali leave forever, leaving Amir no longer having to look at the guilt that was eating him up inside. ‘I lifted Hassan's mattress and planted my new watch and a handful of Afghani bills under it. I waited another thirty minutes. Then I knocked on Baba's door and told what I hoped would be the last in a long line of shameful lies.’ Amir knew how horrible what he did was but felt like he needed to do it to rid himself of some of the guilt he had bottled up inside. He took this action only for the benefit of himself. He didn’t care to honour Hassan or what was right; he only cared for his feelings at the time. Amir is angry with himself but takes it out on Hassan and tries to make it out like he is the bad guy so that he feels less guilty. Hassan knows what is going on and despite the way Amir treats him, pretends he in fact was guilty of theft. Hassan was a true friend and always honoured Amir, something Amir didn’t do. ‘He was already turning the street corner, his rubber boots kicking up snow. He stopped, turned. He cupped his hands around his mouth. "For you a thousand times over!" he…

In chapter 22 Hosseini writes about the events of Amir confronting Assef in attempt of taking Hassan’s son back to America with him. Hosseini describes objects that Amir sees, which he often relates back to his home in America and his wife, Soraya. This is shown when he notices marks on Assef’s arms and realises that he had ‘seen those same tracks on homeless people living in grimy alleys in San Francisco’. This shows his constant distraction and worry for his home and the desire for the safety that the reader senses he has when in America. Soraya also provides a comfort for Amir, shown when Hosseini writes that Amir ‘thought about Soraya. It calmed me.’ This strongly suggests to the reader that Amir doesn’t want to be in this situation, also shown when Amir realises to himself that what he was doing ‘was insanity. Worse yet, it was irresponsible. There was a very realistic chance that I was going to render Soraya a biwa, a widow.’ This chapter is a turning point for this character, as he overcomes his cowardice that has been haunting him all his life. This is shown in the text when he is being beaten by Assef, but laughs and feels a sense of relief that he is getting what Amir feels he deserved.…
