A team is not required to surrender possession when the ball carrier is tackled, in contrast to American football, where a team must surrender their possession when a player is tackled and no downs remain. Rugby union players must win possession in open play, unless the team in possession makes an infringement, scores, or the ball leaves the field of play.…

Football, as well as rugby and soccer, is believed to have originated from an ancient Greek game known as Harpaston. Harpaston is mentioned quite frequently throughout classical literature, in which it is referred to as a “very rough and brutal” game. The rules of this ancient sport were simple: a team would be awarded points when a player would move the ball across the opposing team’s goal line by either kicking the ball, running with it across the goal line, or throwing it across the line to another player. The only objective of the other team was to stop the ball from crossing their line, by whatever means possible. There was no specific field length, no side line boundaries, no specified number of…

What would you rather do, go to a football game or a rugby game? Would you rather yell at the “scrum” or cheer for the completed “flea-flicker”? Do you prefer pads or shorts? Football was putting America in a crisis when the sport first became popular (Majerol 18). Majerol reported that “In 1905, at least 18 high school and college boys died playing the sport, and more than 150 were seriously hurt” (18). Many injuries came because no protective gear was worn and the rules of the game were not strongly enforced (Majerol 18). People had played and gotten injured would suffer from concussions, broken limbs, spines (Majerol 18). The game of football was close to being banned, but former president, Theodore Roosevelt, was a fan of the game and kept football from being outlawed (Majerol 18). By time the 1870s rolled around football had been labeled as a blood sport (Majerol 18). Ordinary roughness in the sport usually…

Football is one of the most physical sports in the world and is the leading cause of sports related concussions. It is a full contact sport where players are risking themselves in a violent and brutal game which shows them no love. There are way too many players getting concussions while playing full contact football. Professional football players risk the safety of their brains for a few years of fame, and many more who never make it to the circuit risk losing it all just for the love of the game. Where does the injury start? Obviously, it is through contact between the player’s head. Football helmets do not completely protect a player’s head and even the official NFL helmet provider said, “even a helmet that passed industry safety standards…

Sports have come a long way since basketball was played with milk crates and flat balls in the alleys of the poor and rich alike. One may ask, why should I be concerned with the senseless sweating and hours of practice of those who enjoy sports? The answer is one that will open your eyes to the fulfillment sports can bring whether recreational or competitive. Sport activities offer a variety of lifelong qualities and provide those who participate a sense of happiness like no other. Jennie Yabroff the author of “In Defense of Cheering”sheds light to her audience on why Cheering should be taken as seriously as any other sport. In contrast Felisa Rogers the author of “How I Learned to Love Football” tells a story of how she once despised the great American game of football to how she grew ecstatic about its very nature. Both women have admiration for their respective sports and want to encourage others to share their love of sports through their use of ethos and pathos, with pathos being more effective.…

September 13, 2013, was sixteen year old Damon Janes’ last football game. Why, because he was pronounced dead in a local Buffalo hospital three days after that game. His cause of death, brain damage. Janes took numerous hits to the head during a varsity football game. He seemed perfectly healthy, but in actuality, he suffered brain swelling, bleeding, and bruising all resulting from numerous hits to the head while playing football. Janes was only one of the eight high school athletes who died in 2013 from the brain and spine injuries they suffered while playing high school football. In addition to brain trauma, heart conditions, asthma and heat stroke have contributed to three times more deaths in high school players than in college football; all of which may have been prevented. Since the early 1900s the game of football has continuously evolved in an effort to protect its players from injuries and fatalities. In fact, the rules and equipment changes over the years have done just that for college and NFL players. Sadly, according to a number of studies, this is not the case at the high school level where many of these fatalities could have been avoided. It’s time to make high school football as safe as college and professional football so the rewards outweigh the risks.…

American football as we know it originated from rugby played in Britain in the mid-19th century. The person who Americans consider the “Father of American Football” is Walter Camp. Professional football can be traced back to 1982, when there was a $500 contract for the Allegheny Athletic Association and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club to play a game against each other. Originally football was primarily a sport of the Midwestern industrial towns in the United State. In 1902, the American Professional Football Association was formed and two years later the National Football League. The competition was fierce between the two leagues, which led the two leagues to merge. Football eventually became national. When the two leagues merged is when…

American Football has emerged as one of America’s most popular sports to watch and favorite pastime in the fall and winter seasons. This intense and competitive sport was invented in the early 19th century by the “father of football”, Walter Camp (Camp 1). Walter Camp was a football captain and head coach at Yale University. The historical figure, Walter Camp, invented the rules that transformed rugby football into American football, which he all told in his book American Football. He created the rules of a team having eleven men, the use of a line of scrimmage, the point system, and a system of four downs. In the 21st century, which we are currently in, football is almost played the same way but has changed dramatically over time. Many aspects of football have changed including equipment, rules, the popularity of the sport, and athleticism of the players.…
