The components of a healing environment include three important elements. The first is a healing physical environment, which encompasses not only how to care for the patient, but to care for their families, caregivers and also the members of staff (Eberst, 2008). A healing environment should focus on reducing noise levels as well as fewer night time interruptions of sleep, this is known to promote rest and healing. Providing a room with a focus on lighting, music, color and architectural design, can also promote healing (Ananth, Kreisberg, & Jonas, 2011). Working in a quieter environment helps staff enjoy an overall less stressed area to do their work, which results in fewer errors. The next component of importance is that of an integrating work design with new technology. This focus is on patient privacy, a more efficient work environment for staff, and advanced technology in the hospital to support the healing process. The last component is essential to creating a Healing Hospital. Incorporating the “Radical Loving Care” philosophy to all that staff the hospital, from housekeeping to the physicians. This philosophy was developed by Erie Chapman, a well-known…

Spending time in clinicals with this woman in particular, helping her with her daily routine as well as getting to know her on a personal level developed a bond I will never forget. This woman, 96 years young, was full of wisdom and didn’t hesitate to share it all with me. Through this experience I learned what it meant to be a health care provider and truly care for the person I was helping, even when I had never met them before. I’ll never forget the last day of my clinical rotations as I stopped by for a final goodbye to each of the patients I had helped care for and their reactions. Everyone I had helped was more than grateful for my time spent with them, but Beatrice, my last stop before leaving Toledo hospital, broke into tears telling me how I was the hardest worker she had ever had and how much she would miss our time together. It was that moment that I realized this is want I needed to do with my life and that making a difference in someone’s life through healthcare would be the ultimate high.…

Our hospital as well as all hospitals need a health care reform plan to ensure that all patients are getting proper counseling during their hospital stay and when they leave they can take care of themselves to the best of their ability with out-patient help if needed. Education about their illnesses, surgeries, hospital stays, overall health, and after care is of utmost importance to all patients. I have put together a plan for our five new psychologists that will cover all of our patients’ psychological health care needs. I have assigned each one of them duties to ensure every patient gets adequate psychological care. I have chosen an out-patient pain management counselor as our fifth employee because I feel that our patients remain our patients even after they leave our hospital and that we need to provide services to them when they go home should they need them. There will be certain criteria each counselor is expected to follow to meet the many needs of our patients; present and former. “Emotional labor is the work of regulating feelings in the context of employment. Providers of consumer-based mental health services help others through their use of autobiographical experiences. These providers thus routinely perform emotional labor as they negotiate their working relationships with other service users, consumer-provider colleagues, and non-consumer coworkers (Mancini, Lawson, 2009).” With our five new employees, there will be complete, caring, comprehensive psychiatric care for the maintenance and well-being of our patients. After all, our goal here is to give our patients better overall patient health, measurable by shorter hospitalizations and improved adherence to medical regimens.…
