HERO, QUEST AND SACRFICENormally the term hero reminds the reader a robust and glorified character; however, in this book we happen to meet a weak and mentally ill one. So that, this disables the reader see the story from the perspective of a real strong hero who leave his place for a specific purpose, fights against evil or some other powerful mythological giants or dragons. Billy is an American soldier who fights in the WWII in Germany and who is not the right one to be sent to this bloody war even did not know why he was there in the battlefield. Normally real heroic characters symbolize the courage and the wisdom which he gains thorough in the battle against evil but in this story Billy gains nothing but mental illness questioning of time and death and in the end he dies. So, I think there is no strong links between our protagonist and heroic archetypal motifs. Only we can consider that our hero versus the Post Modern war phenomena and himself, his mental disorder as evil.…

Throughout this semester, we have delved into the history of the civilizations that have inhabited the world spanning from 1453 to present day. Whether vicariously from the perspective of a person from that time period through a primary document, or by means of explanation by author Robert W. Strayer and in-class discussions, we have taken an in-depth look at various issues and events over the course of history. Although each event was significant on some scale, certain events had long lasting effects that could still be felt throughout the world today. Each country throughout history had their “moment in the sun” where they experienced power and global recognition. However, one country who has their footprint over most of history was…

Fear led the boys to make illogical choices and the overall thirst for power and dominance caused them to act uncivilized to one another. After being on the island for so long, the boys became aware that it wasn’t crashing on an island that drove them to savagery, but that it was having to deal with each other that led them to the lifestyle they lived. The deterioration of morality among the boys caused them to act in ways they wouldn’t have if they hadn’t crashed on the island. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley shows how scientific advances could and have destroyed human values. Huxley wrote Brave New World in 1932, and most of the technologies he examines in the book have, to some extent, turned into realities. He expresses the concern that society has been neglecting human-being distinction in the progression of worshipping technology. In the story there are no mothers or fathers and people are produced on a meeting line where they are classified before birth. They also use a drug called, soma, to control themselves which illustrate the lack of personal freedom. Everyone in the state world do whatever they were taught since they were growing. For example, one of the tasks they give people is sexuality which is shown as an everyday and simply entertaining activity with no emotions or feelings whatsoever. We can see an extreme loss of human values because what makes a human being is the fact that they feel, think, and choose. It is amazing how Huxley wrote this book more than 60 years ago, yet we see resemblance to it in our society today. For example, society uses different kinds of drugs to control moods if they want. Another good example could be how doctors are now producing children with particular qualities based on what their parents want and using donors' genes. A very shocking moment for me in the novel was when Linda, John's mother, was dying and the people in the state world were watching and laughing at it. Today we see a lot of people who don't respect their parents and people who enjoy the suffering of others. What has society gone to? How would you feel to be in a twisted world where we are produced in factories? How would you feel to be in a world where there are no such things as freedom or ethics? I think society is close to get there and it's sad because all our feelings, thoughts, and values make the meaning and beauty of life.…
