Alpha Cypermethrin Case Study
ABSTRACT: Alpha-cypermethrin (a-CYP) is one of the most widely used insecticides. It may become an air pollutant and adversely affect the health. The present study was designed to determine whether treatment with N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), a well-known antioxidant, can be useful for the management of the deleterious effects of a-CYP on lung tissues. For this purpose, thirty two male rats were divided into four different groups (eight rats for each). Group (I) gavaged with corn oil (control group), group (II) gavaged daily with NAC (150 mg kg21 body weight), group (III) gavaged with a-CYP (14.5 mg kg21 body weight/ day, dissolved in corn oil), group (IV) gavaged with NAC then with a-CYP 2 h later for 12 weeks. a-CYP significantly increased serum …show more content…
Pyrethroid insecticides have been used in agricultural and home preparations for >30 years and account for about 25% of the worldwide insecticide market (Wolansky et al., 2006). They are preferred over organophosphates and carbamates due to their high efficacy against a wide variety of insects, low mammalian toxicity and easy biodegradability. Cypermethrin
(CYP), a synthetic pyrethroid, is largely used for such purposes as it has a wide safety margin in mammals (Khan et al., 2009). The technical grade CYP is a racemic mixture of eight isomers (four cis and four trans isomers). Two stereoisomers are termed alpha-isomer of CYP, which is believed to be the most active isomer, and is known as a-CYP which is extensively used as an ectoparasiticide in animals, and as insecticides in crop production and public health program (Manna et al., 2004). Despite a wide margin of safety, a-CYP is not free from side-effects; hence toxicity of a-CYP in farm animals can occur through spray/dipping or ingestion or through the ingestion of sprayed crops.

Alpha-CYP not only produces toxicity in animals but also suppresses their cell-mediated as well as humoral immunity (Luty et al., 2000). Side-effects of a-CYP on male reproductive functions are so many (Song et al.,
2008). Mutagenic risk, mutagenic activity inducing dominant lethal mutations in male germ cells, embryonic resorption fetal mortality and chromosomal aberrations are the other side-effects reported (Shukla and Taneja, 2002;
Giri et al., 2003). Population exposed to CYP for several days presented several respiratory symptoms after exposure such as dyspnea, wheezing, cough, fever, interstitial and eosinophilic pneumonia accompanied with blood eosinophilia
(Garcia et al., 2009). The pathological effect of
CYP on lung of pigeons was presented by hypertrophy and emphysema (Suzan, 2012).
N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is a small molecule containing a thiol group. It was first introduced as a mucolytic drug in the 1960s. NAC has been found to have an antioxidant effect, acting as a free-radical scavenging agent and a precursor of reduced glutathione (GSH). These effects provide the organism with crucial defense mechanism towards

    1. Carlson classifies modern insecticides into two groups of chemicals. The first group, represented by DDT, is known as the “chlorinated hydrocarbons” and the other group, represented by Malathion and parathion, consists of the organic phosphorus insecticides. Although both are organic, the organic phosphorous insecticides are more poisonous than the chlorinated hydrocarbons and have the ability to destroy enzymes.…

    Fulltec - Business Profile

    • 29 Pages

    Fulltec AG, Zug, Switzerland, was established in 1973 at Neuhausen am Rheinfall in Switzerland as a private limited company. The company has been taken over by Mr. Frank W. Bencsits in 2000 as the General Manager. He has been forming a fully new innovative R&D company for research and development of active natural substances for pest controlling (repellents as insecticides) since that time. Consequently the company’s activities mainly comprise R&D, but bio-insecticides and repellents are also produced and sold. Fulltec doesn’t sell its products under its own trademarks so far. The products are sold through thoroughly chosen international sales partners who resell under their own brand policies. As the results of intensive research, fully natural based active ingredients with highest activity and lowest toxicity were found in 2001. Fulltec is the patent holding company for these substances. Until 2005 most of the filed patents were granted in the EC and several overseas countries like USA, China, Hong Kong and Australia. In 2002 moved the company to its new modern site in Zug, Switzerland to expand and improve R&D and manufacturing. As these new natural based Active Substances don't have the broadly well-known negative characteristics shown by the common competitive synthetic products available on the market - above all regarding toxic effects – they will possibly completely change the way of pest control business in the near future. The inventions comprise different natural substances of two groups: Ingredients of the first group only repel and those of the second group kill and repel insects and acarides of all kinds. The main objective of Fulltec AG is to be a totally ecologically oriented company, developing and selling insecticide and repellent products containing exclusively natural based and lowtoxic active substances and ingredients. The Fulltec products are based on active ingredients obtained from natural sources…

    Air pollution is an undercover issue that causes more harm to us than we can understand. According to The 11th Hour, 30 to 60 percent of school children in America have developed asthma due to the breathing in of polluted air. Chronic exposure to traffic related pollutants may accelerate, or even provoke, disruption of the normal regulatory process eventually contributing to the increase of asthma incidences. Exposure to chemicals in the air also causes more diseases and cancers (The 11th Hour). Things like old insulation, car exhaust, or faulty furnaces release contaminants such as asbestos, radon, and carbon monoxide. These types of chemicals affect the respiratory system which may result in lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, or fibrosis.…

    Water and Air Pollution

    Everyday actions cause pollutants; one major contributor to air pollution that humans produce is carbon monoxide. We do this simply by driving our automobiles. This toxic pollutant is considered a primary air pollutant because it enters our air directly from the source; our motor vehicles. Human made pollution is something that we can change by using less fuel, coal and oil in our cars, home and factories. Standards have been set by government agencies to help regulate the levels of pollutants in the air. In many cases it is too late. The air pollution control act of 1955, which established federal grants for research and the Clean Air Act (CAA) that further extended the federal government powers for direct intervention to reduce pollution, were established because of increasing detriments to human’s health and the environment. (Christoforou, 2004) The health hazards that are a result of air pollution have become more common to our elderly and young children. Lung disease, asthma, chest pain or even death, are the results of our careless activities. In the 1930s in Belgium, SO2,(sulfur dioxide), and particulate matter combined with high relative humidity and caused 65 deaths in less than 5 days (Christoforou, 2004).…

    Air pollution is, by far is the biggest concern in my locality, followed by bad roads and industrial emissions. Every increasing motors vehicles and their activities, rapid rate of industrialization, wide spread construction activities has contributed to poor air quality in Hyderabad. Resulting in poor health for citizens and premature death in carrying mothers. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), respirable suspended particulate matter level in my city is on rise and it might cross the acceptable limit soon. According to Times of India, a famous national News daily, 20% of lung cancer patients who die in the city are exposed to high levels of air pollution. Central Pollution control board (CPCB), a government organisation has supported this argument, stating that, air in Hyderabad is dangerously laced with carcinogenic agent benzene. On the national level, Anumita Roychoudhury, Executive director of Centre for Science and Environment, India stated that “Half of Indian Urban population breathes air laced with particle pollution that has exceeded standards. A high one-third of our population is exposed to critical levels of air pollution. Smaller…
