The title Seventeenth Summer is certainly appropriate for the story that the author, Maureen Daly, has crafted. When readers, especially those who are reaching their adolescent years, hear and read the number seventeen next to the word summer, they would immediately assume that the novel would revolve around an adorable or cringe-worthy love story between two love-struck teens, and their guess would not be too far off from what the story is about. In addition, readers can infer that the main character of the story is seventeen years old, and his or her romantic fling will occur or take place in summer. Personally, when I first read the title and saw the cover of the novel, I perceived it as an ordinary romantic story of two individuals who…

Peer pressure is defined as the social influence a peer group exerts on its individual members, as each member attempts to conform to the expectations of the group. No matter the generation, peer pressure plays a big role throughout people’s lives. Whether it starts with how people dress or who they hang out with, peer pressure is virtually everywhere. People may think that they are not affected by peer pressure, but every choice they make is centered on the opinions of others. Peer pressure can get so out of control that people’s lives are conquered by the pressure and lead them to make decisions they ultimately disagree with and even ruin their lives. The novels All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and It Happened to Nancy…

In the poem, “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the author uses subtle symbolism to reflect the speaker’s distant relationship with his father. The title of the poem immediately tells the reader that the poem takes place in winter, a time that connotes both coldness and gloominess. Hayden starts his short, redolent poem by writing that the speaker’s father put his clothes on in the, “blue black cold” (Hayden line 2). The reader instantly feels the cold and iciness inside and outside the house.…

Alice Langholt, (2012), wrote: “Some of the main causes of peer pressure are related to age-appropriate behavior. Adolescents develop a strong desire to fit in with their peers and be accepted by them. This desire makes adolescent peer pressure tough to resist. Peer pressure occurs when group of people force each other to go along with certain beliefs and behaviors. The group approves of the followers and sometimes harshly disapproves of those who don’t fall in line. The consequences of being rejected by one’s peers are embarrassment and shame, both very negative emotions for teens. Simply agreeing with the group’s attitudes usually isn’t enough; teens have to prove themselves by backing their words with actions. Teens may be unwilling to speak up because they’re afraid to lose a friendship with one of these leaders or because they fear losing their status in the group.”…
