~The name of my book is All Quiet on The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque. This book was published on January 29, 1929 ~This is a fictional story but it is based on real events.
This novel is narrated by young Paul Baumer who is a young German soldier that is fighting in World War I. The beginning of the book the men are in the battlefront fighting. When done they come back to camp and find that seventy of their hundred and fifty men were killed. Paul and his buddies go to visit a friend that was injured during their time at the front. His friend is dying and Paul has to watch him die. He then goes back home on leave, while there he has to break the news to his friends mom that her son has died. After his leave he goes back to camp where he will stay shortly before he will have to leave and go back to the front. While at the front they are bombarded with enemy shells and food supplies are running scarce. As the battle runs on more and more men are getting injured and dye. As resources become scarcer and scarcer, group morale begins to lower. They are attacked. Men are dying from flying bullets of the enemy's. Paul sees many of his friends being shot and killed. He is lying in a trench when he sees one of his friends Kat get shot, so he grabs him and begins to haul him back to camp. He carries him for miles only to find out that what he thought his friend got shot in the leg, actually got shot in the head and was dead the whole time. Paul is the only survivor of his group of friends. Then, on a reportedly quiet day in October 1918, Paul dies. "His face has an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come".
Paul is the main character in the book. He is the protagonist of the book. Paul is not the typical war hero type main character in a book, he is just a regular man with a family doing his job.
