Francisco X Alarcon word choice, word order, line breaks, and use of stanzas set the tone for the poem “Mexican is Not a Noun”. During the time that the poem was written there was an uprising against immigration laws. The word choice, word order, line breaks, and the use of stanzas in Alarcon’s poem leads me to believe that Alarcon was a part of the stance against the governments treatment of Hispanic’s and the harsh immigration laws. The tone of Alarcon’s poem is corrective, condemning, bitter, painful and sad. The short stanzas along with the choice of words used to describe what Alarcon feels about the word Mexican are written to evoke emotion within the reader. Alarcon uses the word “it” repeatedly to describe how being oppressed makes…

In a Hispanic household the language that is spoke is considered Spanish. Under the “umbrella” term Hispanic you have a breakdown of the different types of Hispanics such as Mexicans, Puertoricans, Dominicans, Cubans and Panamanians that speak Spanish but their words have similar yet different meanings. Usually in an older generation Hispanic household the language is spoken by everyone including the children. When speaking to outsiders the Hispanic family prefers to speak Spanish unless the other individual does not understand it. It is very hard for the older generation of Hispanics to attempt to speak to the new generation because the newer generation speaks English. Many older generation Hispanics were never really taught how to speak English.…

Mexican American's make up 10.3% of the United States population and are 66% of the entire Latino population living inside the United States. Mexican American's have been living in the southwestern region of the United States for hundreds of years. The United States has the second largest Mexican population, and Canada has the third largest Mexican population. Mexican American's are descendants of Mexico who ultimately derived from Spanish Europeans who colonized the area around 1521. Mexican American's native language is Spanish. Do to the proximity of the United States and Mexico there are Mexican American's who speak fluent Spanish and English. The ebb and flow of Mexicans that currently move about freely among the two countries create an atmosphere of Mexican American's who only speak Spanish. Living in Texas most of my life I was no stranger to Americans who either didn’t speak English at all or whose first language wasn’t English. As I interacted with people, mostly from Mexico, I had a hard time understanding why they didn’t want to speak English . Although I’m ashamed to say it, I often viewed these people as less educated and meek. A statement that Ive heard all to often is that people who don’t speak English should learn our language or leave America. However, I’ve never considered myself racist or close minded, despite the fact that I often felt frustrated and uncomfortable while trying to interact with people whose first language wasn’t English. Being on the other side of this situation forever changed…

My personal philosophy of working with Latino Students My personal philosophy of working with Latino students whose primary language in the home is Spanish, is that of understanding, encouragement, and guidance. I personally have first-hand knowledge and understanding of what it means to grow up in a home where the primary language was Spanish. I grew up in a home where both my parents spoke nothing but Spanish and understood very little English. Based on my experiences, I found that the understanding of my teachers was helpful and relieved some of the fears of being in a classroom where I could not understand what was being said.…

I have also wanted to learn Spanish for a very long time. But seeing this video also makes me wonder if it is possible at my age. My boyfriend’s grandfather is 81 and he speaks fluent Spanish, they have tried teaching him English for the 16 years that he has lived in America but as much as he has retained he still cannot speak fluent English. He only knows the basics such as how are you, hi, hello, etc. It is probably because of how old he is and because he is at the high end of the spectrum where the ability to learn another language is nearly diminished. Then again I feel like if you are at the age where your ability to learn a language is decreasing but you already speak multiple languages then you may not be classified into this group?…
