Look back at our day so far, how many people have we seen ignoring the world around them, not paying attention to the cashier or not absorbing the information in class? In Alina Tugend essay, multitasking can make you lose…Um... focus, she reported that multitasking may seem like it saves people time however, it makes people less efficient. It may be true that technology provides us with time-saving devices like push to cars, cell-phones that consist of 4G internet access, and washing machines with built in dyers; however most of us still complain about not having enough time. Like everything else in the world, technology has its pros and cons; it affects peoples’ concentration, writing skills, and what we consider …show more content…
In Nicholas Carr’s essay, Is Google Making Us Stupid, he states, “research that once required days in the stacks or periodical room of libraries can now be done in minutes” (732). The use of technology is very beneficial and time efficient, however does the pros overcome the cons? Carr also discusses the fight against technology to stay focus; since now a day, “…three or four paragraphs is too much to absorb” (733). I reckoned that we must realize that reading doesn’t come natural like speech does.     Andro Khalil 9/20/2014 Professor Jama “Is Google making us stupid?” As days pass by in front of our eyes and as the generations are changing, the world is changing dramatically and being remodeled to where Google is the book of answers. Life isn’t as challenging for our community and does not push anyone to put in any effort as it did Fifty years ago. Nicholas Carr has every right to publish this article on how reading isn’t the same anymore. Books can be looked at as rare no-a-days, something that’s going to be extinct in a few decades. Our parents learned about the world and its news in the Newspaper. When students wanted to learn about the moon or had a paper that needed to be written, it was the library that helped them, not Google. Instead of clicking away, they flipped pages and no words were skimmed or wasted. At a point in time, people needed to make an actual effort to live and expand their mind with actual knowledge. Carr’s biggest claim was his opinion on the internet, he gives us the idea that the internet is giving people the chance to become lazier than ever and still assume that they will get things done. The internet allows people to put their brains aside collecting dust and forget about books because “Google” always has another shortcut for them.     Michelle Huynh English 4 Professor Polster April 22, 2015 “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” In the essay “Is Google Making Us Stupid? What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains,” the author Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet has detrimental effects by altering the way we comprehend and the way our brain functions. Carr’s mind is changing because he is not thinking the way he used to think. He used to love reading books and articles, but now he can barely get through two or three pages because his “concentration often starts to drift after two or three pages” (Carr 138). Reading a printed media has become a struggle since Carr is losing the ability to focus on deep thinking. He just skims through the text without actually thoroughly reading it. In reality, we have to struggle to stay focused in a long piece of writing because we use the web so much. Carr believes that deep reading is indistinguishable from deep thinking. However, the Internet does all the thinking for us with a great database of information that can answer all of our questions and many sources online with short passages of text. Everything that the Internet does has become a “shortcut,” so the printed media has to reach those expectations now. Our brain relies on the Internet so much that it starts draining out our ability to think independently. Therefore, according to Carr, the Internet has made him feel “an uncomfortable sense that someone, or something, has been tinkering with [his] brain…” (Carr 138). Although the Internet can affect our brains, it has made a huge impact on our daily lives by providing easy and responsive communication among peers and a secure access to information.…

    Is Google Making Us Stupid Nicholas Carr’s Atlantic Online article “Is Google Making Us Stupid,” discusses how the use of the computer affects our thought process.
