When Albert tries to degrade her, by telling her that the only thing she can do in
Memphis is to be Shug 's maid, Celie maintains her affirmative stance "I 'm pore,
I 'm black, I may be ugly and can 't cook, […]. But I 'm here". (C.P, 187) with this response, Celie gains back the "I am" she is forced to amend at the beginning of the narrative.
Shug takes Celie with her to Memphis, treats her as a friend and an equal, she says, "I brought you here to love you and help you get on your feet". (C.P, 190)
Shug gives Celie a big bedroom which "over look the backyard and the bushes down by the creek". (C.P, 188), because she knows that Celie is used to morning sun. It is the first time that someone thinks of Celie 's comfort. Celie 's comfortable life with Shug enables her to discover her own creativity in sewing pants. A literary critic, Maria Lauret points out that "… Shug 's successful

Alice Walker 's _Everyday use_ is a story about a mother and her two daughters, Dee and Maggie. Mama, the narrator, of the story gives us a good description of both daughters by showing their different strengths and weakness. Dee and Maggie are as different as day and night but Mama love them both. Dee the older daughter is very beautiful, independent, confident, and educated but she is also arrogant, selfish and self centered. Maggie on the other hand, is uneducated and unattractive with burn scars on her face arm and leg leading to her having a low self esteem and being shy. Mama, an African American is a strong hard-working, independent, uneducated, and self sufficient woman who despite all these great qualities still have a low self esteem and lacks self confidence.…

Celie’s first challenge in the story is enduring a very tough childhood in the form of rape and abuse from her stepfather, Pa. She writes to God that “He never had a kine word to say to me” and then details how she was raped “he push his thing inside my pussy. When that hurt I cry. He start to choke me, saying You better shut up and git used to it”. Celie had a choice to rebel and fight back, however she just allows Pa to rape her, showing little resistance. The reason for this is because Celie knew she was weak and couldn’t overcome her his physical strength. Celie then ends up giving birth to a son, however Pa takes this child away from her.…

But, She can now take away her sister Nettie from Pa, but eventually gets kicked out of the house because she would not accept Mr.’s sexual advantages. Nettie promises to write to Celie, but unfortunately never receives any letters from Her. Celie’s life slowly starts to decline after her sister Nettie leaves. She was really the only person in her life who she could love and receive love back. Celie is a very defeated character, and she is very passive but we know from reading that she is telling her own story in these letters to God. Later in the book, many women come in to her life including her Daughter in law, and her Husbands Mistress, and these women practically help her break out of the constrains of life, and find joy. Sexism is a very big theme to this book. Some other themes include race, love, sexual identity, and femininity. Mr.’s mistress, Shug Avery, a blues singer comes to stay at their house and Celie finds herself sexually attracted to her. Soon, Celie and Shug find a stash of Nettie’s letters, which Mr. had been keeping hidden from her for years. These letters describe her life among missionaries in…

In Alice Walker's short story, Everyday Use, the line said by mama "She thinks her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that ‘no' is a word the world never learned to say to her.", enters us, the readers, into the personality of Dee. Furthermore, the line offers us an open window to view the inter-workings of the family unit.…

Mama, the narrator of Alice Walker’s story, “Everyday Use,” is a strong, loving mother who is sometimes threatened and burdened by her daughters, Dee and Maggie. Gentle and stern, her inner monologue offers us a glimpse of the limits of a mother’s unconditional love. Mama is brutally honest and often critical in her assessment of both Dee and Maggie. She harshly describes shy, withering Maggie’s limitations, and Dee provokes an even more pointed evaluation. Mama resents the education, sophistication, and air of superiority that Dee has acquired over the years. Mama fantasizes about reuniting with Dee on a television talk show and about Dee expressing gratitude to Mama for all Mama has done for her. This brief fantasy reveals the distance between the two and how under appreciated Mama feels. Despite this brief daydream, Mama remains a practical woman with few illusions about how things are.…

Alice has a very blunt way of speaking and her word had a tendency to be extremely sharp (Coletta 239). No one was spared from unflattering comparisons or uncaring insults, not even herself. Her attitude towards polite small talk and false compliments might be best summed up by the infamously embroidered pillow she owned stating “If you haven't got anything good to say about anyone, come and sit by me.” While Alice was not purposefully cruel, she did not care for censuring herself in order to spare someone’s feeling the way women were expected to in such times. As such, she had little time for people with thin skin.…

However, when Harpo approaches Celie about how to control Sofia, Celie is bitter about the pity she sees in Sofia’s eyes so she tells Harpo to “Beat her” (p.36). After Harpo attempts to beat Sofia to make her listen to him and he instead is the one who comes away injured, she finds out that it is Celie who told him that it was the appropriate course of action. When questioning Celie about how she could encourage the abuse of another woman when she herself has been abused, Celie responds with, “I say it cause I’m a fool, I say. I say it cause I’m jealous of you. I say it cause you do what I can’t….Fight.” (p.40). Sofia exposes to Celie that the world is not binary and that women can fight back against abuse or oppression. Celie admires Sofia for her ability to be assertive and have a will that is not entwined with that of her husbands. However, this does get Sofia in some trouble when she is confronted with racism from the mayor’s wife and as a result ends up with a jail sentence of 12 years. While in jail Celie observes how different Sofia is and serves as a brutal reminder of the difficulties that come with fighting racism and resisting society’s perceptions of what is…

Walker finds her voice through her homelife as a child and what she had to overcome. (Cummings 1). Even though Maggie, Dee, and Mama lived through poverty, they did not have to be “Born into a world marked by racism, sexism, and poverty” as the article “Alice Walker” describes (Cummings 1). In the short story, Maggie and Dee were able to go to school to learn skills such as reading unlike Mama (Walker 21). Walker experienced school, she just had to overcome different more severe obstacles. In the short story “Everyday Use,” Mama has two daughters who develop conflict with the family quilts and who will receive them, although in reality, Walker has at least seven children. Walker may have changed the gender of the children to give a more realistic outlook to her stories because boys are not going to fight over the quilt as much as Dee was over Maggie because they won’t see as much value in them as the sisters did. A newspaper article explains, “Walker stresses not only the importance of language but also the destructive effects of its misuse” (Tuten 125). Along with language, Walker stresses heritage and culture in her short story “Everyday Use” through her use of the quilts from her ancestors. Through Walker’s writings, and her personal experiences and life, there are many differences throughout both of…
