soybean and canola which would need more space. Farming algae would make it easy to make biodiesel but it would take some time. Team Hsueh can use this information from “The Fuel Cell” to inform people on how they can make biodiesel from algae. The team can also let people know that farming the algae started a…
This experiment tested the hypothesis that the pure algae populations of Ankistrodesmus and Chorella will show growth in the number of organisms, and the mixed population will establish a dominant species. Each population should also reach its carrying capacity. All of the populations had the same resources available.…
Thalgo was taken over in the year 1999 the company was founded in the south of France. Using the benefits of algae and active marine ingredients in Cosmetics. The sea contains all traces and micro- nutrients all essential to the human metabolism. Algae has the extra ordinary ability to concentrate all the riches of marine life. Algae can contain up to 1000 times more iodine, 100 times more calcium, and 10 times more magnesium than a land plant. Algae is also rich in vitamins and once dried with the micronisation technique they can retain all its vitamins and minerals. The starting point for the company was to develop a patent for micronized marine algae.…
The experiment we conducted in lab used three different species of algae, Macrocystis (brown), Plocamium (red) and Ulva (green). Before we conducted anything, we first measured the initial oxygen concentration in the water that was used to house each alga. This was done because in the water that we used there happened to be phytoplankton which can respire and photosynthesize. If we didn’t take them into consideration our results would end up skewed. Once that was known we took a piece of each algae that had a surface area of 39.26 cm² and placed them in individual flasks filled with the water we had previously measured.…
o Ethanol: biofuel made from plants such as sugarcane, corn and switch-‐ grass. § Convert starch in plant material to simply sugars that are processed into ethanol Advantages of Biofuels (over oil) • Oil is concentrated in small number of countries -‐-‐ biofuels can be grown almost anywhere • If crops not used faster than can be replenished à no net increase in CO2 emissions – [UNLESS existing forests or grasslands are cleared to raise the new crops] • Biofuels are available, easy to store and transport in existing fuel networks (bridge technology)! • Can reduce CO2 emissions by 70% (if forests are not cleared!)…
Due to high cost of crude oil, the nation is in turmoil over prices of gas prices. This letter is a proposal for drilling in the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge). Drilling in the ANWR is meant solely to reduce the reliability on foreign crude oil and to help the nation in its economic down side due to the rise in gas prices.…
“Things are not looking good in our oceans and seas, our bays and waterways, our rivers and streams.” This is what Meehan claimed in his essay “Seafarming at the End of the World.” For those that have never heard of this concept, sea farming is a form of marine cultivation where organisms are raised and grown in a particular area. Peter Meehan explores this idea due to the dramatic decrease in certain organisms such as kelp, shellfish, and oysters. Sea farming is the only proposal thus far, that will save the oceans from climate change and ocean acidification.…
Biodiesel can help to cut our reliance on fossil fuels, and improve our energy security and energy independence. It could be massively produced in many parts of the world, the US alone has the capacity to produce annualy more than 50 million gallons of biodiesel.…
Due to rising oil prices and rapid climate change, countries around the world are looking desperately for alternatives to crude oil products that could serve the worlds growing fuel needs. Many solutions have been scrutinized and some have shown the potential to replace non-renewable fuels like diesel and petroleum products in the future, These renewable fuels are known as biofuels. This extended Investigation will consider one biofuel in particular, Ethanol; its production methods, energy output, and its pros and cons.…

In this paper I will explore the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel source. Ethanol is considered a renewable energy resource; as it is derived from crops such as: corn, sugarcane, beets, as well as, other organic materials. The use of ethanol could decrease our dependence on ever depleting supplies of fossil fuels; such as oil.…
Over the past century, as a side effect of food production, humans have been releasing huge amounts of nutrients, specifically nitrogen and phosphorus into water resources like lakes, rivers and even oceanic coasts. This has caused enormous growth in algae populations, literally choking the life out of aquatic ecosystems and polluting water for humans as well. These “Harmful Algal Blooms” (HAB’s) or green tides as some call them can produce toxins that can hurt animals and humans alike turn water green and can cover miles of water in a single bloom. (Dec.ny.gov, 2014).…
of high levels of pollution. There is a need for environmentally sustainable energy sources to find a viable and…
In the EU, where only about 5% of the gross consumption is made up of renewables, which is lower than observed in other parts of the world, the share of renewables is expected to double by 2010, and the share of biogas, as part of it, is expected to rise to 12% (Nielsen, Al Seadi, 2006). The Dutch government, in its white paper on energy calls for a simultaneous approach of continuous energy savings, a 30% improvement of efficiency by 2020 and a 20% share of renewable energy in 2020 (Kwant, 2003). In the Netherlands, the potential of energy production from biogas has been estimated to be 49 PJ in 2020 (Nielsen, Al Seadi, 2006).…
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is also another energy source that is apt for our country since we have many tropical communities. Of course, aside from the power that it generates, OTEC also contributes to the growth of marine life.…
