Alfred Lord Tennyson's The Charge Of The Light Brigade
The poet Alfred Lord Tennyson speaks the poem “the charge of the light brigade” with many themes in mind, but the main themes that are best portrayed are honor, and death. The poem talks about a British brigade consisting of 600 men, with only horses and swords. They charge a Russian unit knowing that this mission might be their last. We can infer that the poet Alfred lord Tennyson has these two themes in the poem based on the details provided by the poem “The Charge of the Light brigade”, and the poem as a whole. Alfred lord Tennyson’s “The Charge of the Light brigade “shows warfare as a whole, but is best seen in the third stanza.     As we have discussed and examined over the past two weeks of our seminar, John Keegan’s The Face of Battle explores warfare from the viewpoint of the common soldier by analyzing and comparing the three well-known battles of Agincourt, Waterloo and Somme. Keegan's three examinations of Agincourt, Waterloo and the Somme begin by analyzing the traditional outlines of events. Keegan then moves through the main phase of each battle, attempting to make sense of the major events, providing the frame and context necessary in order to begin considering the combatants: how the soldiers felt before the battle, what actually happened when the troops engaged, focusing-in on what these nuanced psycho-sociological details provide. Towards this monumental effort, while limiting much of his coverage largely to the first day of the offensive, Keegan was particularly focused revealing the brutality of the first day of Somme: “In all, the British had lost about 60,000, of whom 21,000 had been killed, most in the first hour of the attack, perhaps the first minutes" (Keegan, 1983). The conditions of the battle were so abhorrent, Keegan describes, with “long docile lines of young men, shoddily uniformed, heavily burdened, numbered about their necks, plodding forward across a featureless landscape to their own extermination" (1983).…

    A similarity between the poems ‘The Charge of the Light Brigade’ and ‘the falling leaves’ is how they both focus all attention on the destructiveness and horror of war. In "The Charge of the Light Brigade" the destructiveness of war is highlighted through the use of imagery. One example of this was when Tennyson was describing the Brigade as riding "Into the jaws of Death/Into the mouth of Hell" which shows that perhaps even though they knew they were going to die they rode onwards anyway, the image itself of "the jaws of Death" is quite scary and adds to the impact that Tennyson is trying to get across. While Tennyson uses quite horrific imagery, Cole is a lot more subtle in the way she describes the death toll in her poem; she actually compares them to leaves and snowflakes. The metaphors "I saw the brown leaves dropping from their tree" and "They fell, like snowflakes wiping out the noon" compare the likeness between leaves, snowflakes and soldiers - leaves fall in autumn, snowflakes fall in winter and soldiers fall in war, in the case of the soldier by fall the poet is trying to get across the fact that they die and just how impermanent the soldiers are as leaves die after one year and snow will only usually last about a week, the poet is showing the shortness of the soldiers' lives and how horrific it is. However at the same time it may actually show that she respects the soldiers for what they are doing and believes that war is just a part of life, like leaves falling from trees and snowflakes falling from clouds are. It also shows that she believes the soldiers should be remembered. When we think of leaves and snowflakes we think of them as harmless, by comparing the soldiers to leaves and snowflakes the poet it implying that the soldiers are harmless and innocent.…
