In reading more about the Winged Victory of Samothrace, I was able to learn about the Greek goddess after which the statue is created. Victory was a goddess that would appear after a great triumph, whether it be athletic or war based. Upon her arrival she would bear a wreath, trumpet, or fillet to the conquerors. In return, wine, or milk would be offered to the goddess as a libation. This statue is extremely complex, and in reading about it I learned a great deal about how difficult it would be to create such a piece.…

The Indian campaign of Alexander the Great began in 326 BC. After conquering the Achaemenid Empire of Persia, Alexander launched a campaign into India. To deal with the ever-changing military, cultural, and economic landscape, he planned meticulously, he analyzed every piece of information and formulated as many alternatives as possible, to help the world. He built an empire that was no more than 40,000 men. Toward that end, he used tactics, mobility, and weaponry—including the formidable Macedonian phalanx—to overcome his opponents. he was able to recruit indigenous professionals into his governmental structure and leverage their skill and…

The Hellenistic Age or Hellenistic World was an age where Greek and conquered cultures integrated together. It made a huge impact on society by the spreading and diffusion of cultures, the East meeting the West. The important lesson in this era was the lesson in change and continuity. It was also a period of uncertainty which the Greeks slowly learned to adapt to. However, Alexander the Great's conquests had remarkable effect on the civilizations during this time as well. Alexander, along with his leading generals swept across Egypt, in the Middle-east, and Persia's into India becoming key players in the spread of Hellenistic culture.…
The Alexander portrayed by Arrian in his The Campaigns of Alexander, is an interesting and complex Alexander, a character that slowly grows, matures and evolves throughout his adventures in new lands. Arrian is able to give an in depth description of the battles Alexander took part in as well as the lands he traveled to, while at the same time describing Alexander’s character. He is able to describe how Alexander goes from an over-confident youth, with great dreams of grandeur, to an adult who remains almost the same but more wise, and then finally a sad shadow of his former self who finally dies in depression.…
Many people think that Alexander the Great was truly great because of all his accomplishments, but not all of the things he did were great. He did lots of cruel things to people and animals just because he wanted to gain more power. Alexander has killed approximately 100,000 people only in four major battles (Alexander’s Legacy Doc E). Alexander was a prince who was born in macedonia of 356 BC. Alexander was very arrogant. He was taught by a philosopher Aristotle. He taught him subjects like, politics, sports, and warfare. Philip, Alexander’s father built the macedonian army into a deadly fighting machine, this sparked alexander’s interest and was eager to to lead the army. And Alexander got his chance to lead at the age of 20, because Philip…
Alexander the Great like most heroes in history have traits that makes it possible for him to be able to do great things. Alexander of Macedonia was a 20 year old leader who got his empire from passed down from family, Macedonia and city-states in Greece. Alexander decided to attempt to conquer the entire Persian Empire, from Egypt to India, In this process he did things historians question made him great or not. Alexander the Great was great because of his intelligence, empathy for others and leadership.…
After learning about the history of Alexander’s conquest of the world and his engineering achievements from both the perspective of the conqueror and the conquered, I believe he should be remembered as a hero, because of these three reasons. The first reason is he showed respect for his enemies, next he was a brilliant commander and last but not least he invented very evolved things for his time.…
Alexander the Great was a lord of Macedonia in Ancient Greece. He was conceived in Macedonia in 356 BC. He was guided by Aristotle and turned into the ruler of Macedonia at 20 years old. He was known for building a major realm crosswise over numerous Greek settlements. Along these lines, Greek culture was spread out along numerous urban communities all through the Near East. The Greek culture spreading along the Near East was something worth being thankful for Greece since it enabled them to impact culture and dialect into different urban communities. It wasn't such something worth being thankful for the general population that lived in the Near East urban communities and past in light of the fact that they didn't get the chance to build up…
The start of western culture came with the Greeks, and Alexander made it achieve global dominance by spreading it throughout the vast empire that he formed. He introduced the notion that the government should be for everyone, no just the wealthy. He is also considered to be a pioneer in urban planning and established around twenty cities, such as Alexandria, that became important trade centers and locations of many cultures. The local culture was further changed by Alexander's Greek-influenced city planning techniques, which established towns with a central market square, school, offices, shops, a public theater, and gym. It was changes such as these that led to the Hellenistic period of Greece after the death of Alexander, which is marked with increasing urbanization. His empire contained many cultures because he allowed the nations he conquered to practice any religion they wanted. He also incorporated some of the ideas of other nation into Greek culture making it stronger and…
The Persian empire at its peak has long been seen as one of the largest wholes during the classical era, and few have rivaled its size. The land that Alexander the Great was able to conquer, however, was one of the few that served as an appropriate challenge. Around the time of 338 B.C.E through 323 B.C.E., Alexander's collected mass was a whole. Of a Greek origin, Alexander was taught by Aristotle, the great philosopher, and it can be inferred that he used the strategic methods learned, among other things, to assist him during his expansion. It was short lived, however, when he died of an unknown cause at an early age of thirty-three. Even though his empire crumbled, his legacy lived on. Multiple cities, strongly influenced by Alexander, erected,…
In James Romm's edit of recollections from authors Arrian, Diodorus, Plutarch, and Quintus Curtuis of Alexander's life, we are presented the good and bad tales and parts of Alexander's life. So, James Romm presents the question: Should Alexander be considered great? Like James Romm suggests, I as a modern reader have formed my own opinions of Alexander and if he should indeed be considered "Great". In my opinion, while Alexander was a man whom had qualities that could consider him great, he continuously harmed or killed those close to him and attempted to base a civilization of hypocritical principles.…
Alexander III of Macedon also known as, Alexander the Great, made a name for himself many years ago, but today his “greatness” is being questioned because of research conducted due to modern technology. To be viewed as great, one would need lots of evidence supporting they are a well-rounded person. I believe that Alexander had rightfully earned this title because through my research I have only found evidence that Alexander was a man of greatness. Although Alexander displayed many characteristics of greatness there are three that have stood out me, his strategy, selflessness, and influence. These reasons show clear support that Alexander was Great and never anything less.…
Throughout history the actions, beliefs, and achievements of certain individuals have changed global history. One such individual is Alexander of Macedon, better known as Alexander the Great. During the years of Aristotle came the military rule of Philip of Macedonia. Philip was a great conqueror, but not as great or as popular as his son Alexander. The main thrust of Alexander's reign was that it happened so quickly. With lightning fast speed, the greatest mortal hero of Greece conquered the entire known world. Those conquests would restructure the world order and unite East and West as a cohesive whole in a way beyond what anyone had, up to that point, dreamed of. While the immediate effects of Alexander's life may have seemed mind-boggling to those who lived in his time, the long-term changes wrought by this one man who strove to be a god are even more remarkable.…
