Alexander the great was also great because he was inspirational. My own research shows that “he was an inspiration for later conquerors such as Hannibal the Carthaginian, the Romans Pompey and Caesar, and Napoleon.”. This shows he was great because he inspired others. He is so inspirational Oliver Stone has directed a film about him – http://www.alexander-the-great.co.uk/index.htm . With a great army at his disposal and his brilliant military mind, he started his conquest. From 337-323 B.C.E Alexander conquered Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and a large part of Asia. Alexander ruled from Macedonia to the northern part of India. He defeated the Persians numerous times with his incredible military strategies, even when his armies were outnumbered by almost 200,000 Persian soldiers. The sheer size of his empire was unlike anything ever seen before but when he died in 323 B.C.E, the three main areas he conquered (Greece/Macedonia, Egypt, and Mesopotamia/ Asia) were split up and became their own kingdoms. The area that was once Greece and Macedonia became the Antigonid Kingdom, the Egyptian are became the Ptolemaic Kingdom and the Asia/ Mesopotamia area became the Seleucid Kingdom.…

“Alexander The Great Hero or Villain” By: Shelby Hammond-Helms I think that Alexander the Great is a hero because he had a lot of accomplishments and legacies that are important. Alexander the Great did do some bad things but most heroes do. I think that his accomplishments over ride his actions that were hurtful to other people. In conclusion, Alexander deserves the title of “The Great”. He deserves it because of his education, military accomplishments, and his courage. He was tutored by one of the most influential philosophers, Aristotle. He created the largest empire at the time and was generous with his spoils. Alexander was courageous in battle, and fought alongside his men. Yes, he did have some faults, but the positives outweigh the negatives. Alexander does deserve his title, and to say that he does not is unfair to him and what…

From studying the sources of the ancient world that talk about Alexander The Great, it is clear that many of them present Alexander as being some type of heroic figure or Demi-god. However you could question whether Alexander believed this himself. Only by studying his actions and the actions of those around him can we draw any type of conclusion on this matter. This can be done through the use of sources that exist from the time of and around his death. Most of these sources have been lost or are incomplete however, so I feel that it would be best to mainly consult the sources…

Alexander III of Macedon also known as, Alexander the Great, made a name for himself many years ago, but today his “greatness” is being questioned because of research conducted due to modern technology. I believe that Alexander had rightfully earned this title because through my research I have only found evidence that Alexander was a man of greatness. The effects of Alexander's conquests and politics on the West are well documented. His might secured Greece (and perhaps Europe) from a mounting Persian threat, setting the stage for the later Roman conquest and absorption of Hellenistic civilization. Had Alexander failed at Issus, Granicus, or any number of other critical battles, it is entirely possible that Persians rather than Athenians would have dictated Western thought. Moreover, until his premature death, Alexander held in his hands a power than no man, before or since, has known: the power to bring peace and stability to the known world, uniting it under one banner. This notion traveled forward through time, from Greeks to Romans, and from Romans to Europeans. His lessons of organization, acceptance, and political integration have informed the decisions of countless leaders since, and, most notably, his image has carried forward through time to become one of the most memorable figures in history: Alexander the Great, the man who sought to be a god.…

History has asked us to study and interpret past events and from that research we should learn from the mistakes of man or use the knowledge to improve our current lives. Throughout the study of history we have hard evidence and we also get folklore, or tales of events that represent that of a game of telephone. The ultimate goal of a historian is to accurately depict events and translate them as they occurred. With modern news and technology our future descendents of this planet will have no problem gaining a vast understanding of how we lived and the historic events that took place. This however is not true of past and present historian’s analysis of one of the greatest leaders in the history of the ancient world. Alexander, son of Philip the II, king of Macedon is brought to light with many different opinions. Was this man the ruthless ruler that brought down empires and siege cities while killing innocent in droves? Was he a gracious man of honor that sought to unite the ancient world? Perhaps he was a mad man who thought of himself as a God and his conquest was sought in vein. These are some of the questions that I asked myself while researching this one man’s life. There is a plethora of hard evidence that all historians and journalist agree on about his conquest and his life, but when it comes to his character the discrepancies are remarkable. “To some, he is perceived as a blood-thirsty megalomaniac who should be ranked in the annals of history with Stalin and Hitler, while to others he is a visionary devoted to harmony among races and a united world. Many see him as a man motivated by a need to explore the world while others are convinced that he was only out to plunder the riches of the east” (Borgia 1).…
