Muñoz structures his essay by sharing his personal stories with his readers. He shared the time when he finds real "intriguing" when he watches American people butcher his family's name. He even shared the time when during graduation, a math teacher would perfectly pronounce the names of people from Spanish-speaking countries for the kids' parents in the audience. Another structure he used in his essay was the comparison between Americans and Mexicans. His purpose in starting with a name heard over the intercom at the Fresno Airport was because he heard it from a gate agent, who he found out was Mexican, which her pronunciation of…

He would also declare himself as a professional procrastinator. He told me that he tends to cram 3 days’ worth of work into one day; and sometimes he would only give himself four or five hours to do that much work. One of his biggest excuses, he says, is that his professor is typically an easy grader therefore, he does not have to work as hard. Another excuse he uses is that “I am always late so the professor will understand.” Being vague seems to be a problem in Hugh’s life. So, when he had to make a more specific goal, I helped him process that as well. He ended up with the goal to get all A’s in his masters classes. He also wants to understand the course assignments more clearly. He wants to start on this goal right away.…

The theme that stands out the most is making the right decisions and choices and the future effects that these decisions could possibly have. Bo also makes it seem like everyone involved in his life is being unfair to him. Many of the techniques that Alexie uses allow his writing to improve in sophistication rather than be a simple story of an Indian boy that learns how to read. In the beginning of this essay, Alexie uses forms of ethos in order to improve his credibility in the eyes of his audience. Since Alexie is telling his audience that he remembers learning from a book from when he was three years old it is kind of hard to believe. He…

The novel's main character is Robert Neville, apparently the sole survivor of a pandemic the symptoms of which resemble vampirism. The author details Neville's daily life in Los Angeles, as he attempts to comprehend, research, and possibly cure the disease that killed mankind, and to which he is immune (Neville assumes this is because he was bitten by a vampire bat who was "infected". Because it was not a human, it did not kill Neville, instead, he became ill for a period of time). Neville's past is revealed through flashbacks, while his emotional struggle to cope with losing his humanity is dealt with by going about a daily routine.…

Donald Barthelme’s short story “Aria” is similar to a stream of consciousness, as the narrator continuously and uninterruptedly shoots out her thoughts. In the beginning of the story, the sentences are short, very short, some even only one word. This style of authentic freestyle riffing creates a rapid energy that resembles a rambling. It is like beats of a song all pouring out different cohesive and non-cohesive things. The paragraphs are all very long and each consists of abundant information that has no pretense. For example, she makes bible references when she says “the salt losing its savor” and the fowls of the air” but the reader has no idea what they are connected to. Barthelme employs this structure in order to emphasize on the emotional state of the narrator versus communicating the content to the reader. It is the style of this short story, no dialogue, no explanations, no depth or detail, and no specific characters that contribute to the randomness. The narrator jumps from one idea to another which hardly makes this short story a story but into a window into the mind of the character, effortlessly thinking and reflecting.…

This story relates to situations in my life because I have an extremely busy schedule like the character Michael in the story. The combination of school work, team practices and family life makes it feel like I do not have enough time in every day to get everything done. I play for two ice hockey teams, Bishop Eustace and Team Comcast, which means practices four times a week and games four times a week. If the games are away it could sometimes mean a two hour trip each way plus the game time. When you add in school everyday from 8 until 2:30 and the required homework it feels like there is not enough time in the day. I can understand where a child could get worn out and…
