Alcohol was discovered in india. The babylonians worshiped a wine goddess in 2700 B.C in Greece. One of the first alcoholic beverages in the U.S to gain popularity was mead, a fermented drink made from honey and water. Many people like early immigrants made alcoholic beverage from fruits such as blackberries, strawberries, cranberries,gooseberries,elderberries, and currants also vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots,beets,onions, squash , and celery they also used different types of flowers. The early temperance movement alcohol was a part of american culture from time the first colonies were established. Beer was one of the earliest industries in colonial America.The growing popularity of rum,whisky, beer and other spirits caused a reaction against the effects of excessive alcohol consumption. They thought alcohol was a safer choice and by the eighteenth century, distilled spirits were cheap and widely available. Alcohol was such a normal part of society that it was served at almost every meal and social occasion even at work and other places. Colonists believed drinking different alcoholic beverages was part of a proper diet which it was wasn’t a proper diet because beer would make people fat.     The Temperance Act was significant in expanding America’s idea of a more perfect society, because by banning the manufacturing of alcohol, many factory owners realized it would improve workers output. But, beyond that, it would cut down on crime and poverty in the United States. Many people saw alcohol as a disease that needed practical treatment, and that as time went on, ones condition would decrease, and would lead to increased crime rates (Doc H). In 1851, Maine was the first state to go beyond simply just putting a tax on liquor, it prohibited the manufacturing and selling of all alcohol. This act was actually rather popular among some, and in the Eighteenth Amendment, was passed successfully. The idea was to eliminate as much crime and poverty as possible, to make America a more perfect society. There were even Temperance societies such as the the “Woman's Christian Temperance Union” which pledged its support of the Temperance Act in the Eighteenth Amendment.
