5. ‘Nowadays, the pleasures of reading can never compete with the pleasures of visual entertainment.’ To what extent do you agree? Reading printed texts has been the goto source of knowledge and enjoyment for centuries. It has adapted itself to changing times, from manuscripts to books and now to ebooks. But with the advent of the Information Age and the relative advancement in the field of visual entertainment with better quality audio and video, the popularity of the skill of reading as a source of pleasure has declined. However, the value of reading and the pleasures associated with it cannot be denied. Thus, I believe ‘reading’ will adapt itself again, like it did when mass production was the craze during Industrialisation, by transforming from manuscripts to books. It may , however, have to share its role for pleasure with visual entertainment but still be able to compete. Reading is an innate skill of the modern man. Time spent reading is time well spent. It is the only time when you can examine a fragile thought without breaking it, or explore solutions to problems without the need to worry about results. Comparatively, most visual entertainment is very open and fastpaced which finishes off soon after the movie ends. Hence the privacy aspect of reading gives the reader intellectual pleasure unimaginable by visual entertainment.
This elitist kind of intellectual pleasure is hidden among the black and white pages that only a reader is able to realise and feel an indescribable sense of achievement for example after finishing reading a timeless classic like The Lord of the Rings, How to kill a Mockingbird or Pride and Prejudice. They also point out the issue of time constraint to the constants

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

Throughout the twelve years of my life, I have done a lot of reading. Every year, my reading level improves or my interests change. Often, I find myself looking at my bookshelf; at my old books. The books bring back memories, both funny and mournful. Before, in second grade, I read Geronimo Stilton and Magic Tree House. The books had really big fonts and a myriad of pictures. Furthermore, the books rarely surpassed 100 pages and the stories were much easier. Next, between fourth and fifth grade, I got into chapter books like The Heroes of Olympus. The fonts were much smaller, and there were no more pictures in the book. The plot was much more complex and the book itself was physically bigger. The series was easy, yet it was still more difficult…

Reading means the cognitive process of understanding a written linguistic message. How does a person that doesn’t know how to read make it through one day? Being literate is one of the most important skills to have. It’s something that is needed on a day to day basis. As a product of the ‘80s, I am fortunate to have experienced newspapers, pencil and paper, books, the postal system, and other traditional mediums of information, at their peak. I do appreciate the simplicity of a good newspaper, magazine, book, etc. They do not require electricity, computer, smart phone, or knowledge of information technology to use. However, I also enjoy having the option to get the newest information online if I so choose. I find myself reading more now than I did when I attended Missouri’s illustrious public school system. However, I cannot give the credit to technology; I simply was not interested. I wanted to focus my time on the same things every other red-blooded, teenage male did. I used the excuse, “I learn better by doing.” While kinesthetic learning provides certain advantages over other types, reading is able to deliver information in a much more descriptive manner.…

Reading has taught me how to expand my imagination and how to live freely. More importantly, being able to read has given me self-knowledge and confidence. Being literate has given me the ability to research new information, and has helped me to overcome the fear of public speaking. Nevertheless, each day my literacy is developing, and the more I read daily, the more I educate myself. However, many books like “Life of Pi” or “The Hobbit” has helped me to escape from my natural life. Even though the process to become literate was challenging; with the help of my teachers, parents, and practicing daily, I can now interpret sources and enjoy reading the writings of famous…

Girls and boys from school districts around the world are encouraged to practice reading in their daily lives due its beneficial effects. Writer Alan Maley encourages Extensive Reading, which guides students to read independently and extrinsically. He believes that it, “develops learner autonomy...enhances general language competence” and, “helps develop general, world knowledge” (Maley 2-3). However, the number of people choosing to spend their leisure time invested in a novel is declining by the year. According to Charlotte Alter from Time, “45% of 17-year-olds say they only read once or twice a year, but in 1984, 64% said they read once a week or more”(1). The reason for such a decline can be traced back to technological advancements distracting the younger…
