AIR POLLUTION
* Introduction:
We need air in order for us to breathe. But on some reasons, the air that is physically needed by our bodies is now being polluted. The term "air pollution" is used to describe substances that are artificially introduced into the air. Air pollution stems from gases and airborne particles which, in excess, are harmful to human health, buildings and ecosystems. This chemicals particulate matter or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment or built environment into atmosphere. These pollutants are Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, Chlorofluorocarbon’s (CFC’s), Odors, Smog’s and the Ozone.
* Discussion:
Pollutants enter the atmosphere and into the biogeochemical cycles in different ways. Air currents carry fine particles and gaseous substances into land and may enter various nutrient cycles and food chains through water and soil. Other contaminants react chemically and photo chemically with each other and produce secondary pollutants as oxygen and sulfuric acid. Aerosols and other nuclei and return to the earth as rainfall.
* Implications/Effects:
Air pollution is responsible for major health effects. Every year, the health of countless people is ruined or endangered by air pollution. Many different chemicals in the air affect the human body in negative ways. Just how sick people will get depends on what chemicals they are exposed to, in what concentrations, and for how long. Studies have estimated that the number of people killed annually in the US alone could be over 50,000. Older people are highly vulnerable at diseases induced by air pollution. Those with heart and lung disorders are under additional risk. Children and infants are also at serious risk.
