THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Technology has certainly contributed a lot to the advancement of modern appliances that we use today. Technologies merge to create new and improved technologies. The same principle applies to home appliances; the home appliances of today are certainly more advanced than their previous generations. A good example would be microwave ovens, which came from the merging of several technologies. It is now possible to cook food in a matter of seconds with the use of microwave ovens. Also, one of the many things that technology has brought to us is air conditioning which came from electric fans. Electric fans are made for the sole purpose of providing basic air ventilation. As technology advanced, so did the need for better air ventilation and thus, the air conditioner was born. From living rooms to large halls, air conditioners have certainly improved our lifestyles drastically. Air conditioners have also contributed to improving health by providing comfortable temperature and air ventilation. In some areas with high summer temperatures, air conditioning is virtually a necessity and not just a luxury because of the comfort that it gives. The advancement of technology has definitely made home controlling a breeze for the people of today.
B. Background of the Study
Air conditioners have certainly changed the way we are living as of today. However, with the comfort it provides comes with a high electricity bill. Air conditioners are certainly not the most cost-effective electronic equipment in a business or establishment because it consumes a lot of energy. While the large energy consumption is justified with the comfort it provides, the real problem of the matter is when the user fails to use the air conditioners efficiently, it results to wasted power consumption. On another note, air conditioners contribute to global warming which is why it is important to utilize our air conditioners as efficiently as possible.
Since the technology of SMS in the Philippines is considered to be cheap, the researchers propose SMS as a practical solution. Also, SMS is virtually accessible almost anywhere in the Philippines. Microcontrollers may prove to be very essential to the study because of its ability to control and interface with different electronic devices.
With a SMS based remote controller, people can now manage their own air conditioners...
