Imagine a talking spider whom with the help of his wife fulfills the challenges presented to him by the sky god to receive the god’s stories to share with the world. Also imagine a talking Coyote cheating his way through a game of dice with the feared thunder god over the control of fire. These are two different trickster tales of different cultural importances. Trickster tales are stories that are centered around a character of cultural importance that contain anthropomorphism and usually explain a natural happening. ¨How Stories Came to Earth” and ¨Coyote Steals Fire¨ are both similar and different in various ways including they contain objectives, power entities, and are of different cultures. We are able to conclude this by the use of locations like the jungle and its animals like pythons and tigers, names such as Aso and Nyame, and other dialect in the story. ¨Coyote Steals Fire¨ is from the Native American culture, which this is easily deduced by characters such as coyote, the objectives, and different context that makes statements on the culture. In the african culture the women are equal to men which is shown by way of Anansi's wife Aso helping him come up with plans to catch the animals, But in the Native American culture, women are of lesser value. This is shown by the male dice having a greater value than the female dice. These two cultures are very different. Among the three stories, there are many similarities. The first similarity is that two of the stories narrators are scared of the Jackboots. For example in “The Guard” the narrator kept his/her head down and make no contact with the guard. The narrator was also terrified of the guard that was standing in front of the gate because of the rumors she has heard about the Jackboots. Also In the story “Until Then I Had Only Read These Things In Books” the narrator is hiding somewhere from the Jackboots scared and does not want them to find him/her. This shows that these narrators are scared of the Jackboots because the narrators are scared because for example one of the author's heart was racing. This means that the narrator is scared…

Well to start off, these two stories were tall tales and they were very similar and also very different on the same account. In one case these stories are very similar because both of the stories as just mention are tall tales; also they both include the devil as a main character and men that were very poor. Also both stories have men as the main character who tries to get out of a deal with the devil which they have agreed to. But at the same time both stories are very different. Because in the story “The Devil and Daniel Webster” the man is not greedy, but just merely down on his luck. Also the man in “The Devil and Daniel Webster” sticks to his word. While in the story The Devil and Tom Walker the man is greedy hearted, mean and also does not stick to his word.…

All three of the short stories, “How Stories Came to Earth,” “Coyote Steals Fire,” and “Master Cat: Puss in Boots,” apply the literary theme anthropomorphism, which is the attribution of human characteristics to gods, animals, or inanimate objects because the tricksters, which are animals, possess human traits, ambitions, and emotions. In the first story, the trickster, a spider named Anansi, shows human qualities in many ways, one being that he is married to another spider named Aso. Together, the two spiders show another humanistic trait because they possess curiosity and wish to “know the beginnings and endings of things” (Kaleki 40). This shows anthropomorphism because although Anansi and Aso are insects, they exhibit the desire to learn the history of earth and how everything came to be. The trickster in the second story, Coyote, although not seeking the stories of earth’s creation, shows anthropomorphism through the way he develops a game to play with Thunder. He achieves his goal, obtaining fire for the tribes, through this game since Thunder agrees that if Coyote wins, “[he] ha[s] to give…

One way that they are alike is that it tells how they became enemies, for example the Rat pushes the Cat selfishly into the river, and in the story he eats the boat and Cat thinks that Rat was trying to kill him and he tries to kill Rat. Another way they are alike is in both the legend and the story they are crossing a river, and in the story the Rat eats the boat that they were crossing the river in and in the legend the Rat pushes Cat off of the Ox while crossing the river.Lastly in both Cat gets mad at Rat and tries to hurt him, like when the Cat and Rat cross the river and Rat eats the boat and Cat gets mad and tries to kill him or when they are crossing the river and the Rat pushes him off Ox’s back and Cat gets mad and tries to kill him. These reasons are why I think that the two stories about Cat and Rat are more…

“Novels and stories are renderings of life; they can not only keep us company, but admonish us, point us in new directions, or give us courage to stay a given course.” (Robert Coles). We as humans, all love a good story; whether we are watching a movie, listening to our favorite song, reading a novel or having someone tell us a story, there is always a sense of enjoyment. Stories are all around us and we can trace stories and the act of storytelling back to our early ancestors. "All the individuals of the same species, and the species of the same genus, or even higher, are descended from common parents;" stated by Charles Darwin in Origin of Species, his take on stories was take even though the story may change as humans evolve, they all start with an origin. Looking through the lens of literary Darwinism stories can be a metaphor towards the theory of evolution.…

Betrayal is the first similarity between the two stories, “The Veldt” & “The Lottery”, this is since both stories have characters that have betrayed their own people. The Veldt & the Lottery have their differences and similarities throughout the story. In the Veldt, the children have betrayed their own parents, while in “the Lottery” Tessie Hutchinson’s supposed “friends” wanted to stone her to death over a lottery ticket. The children and the villagers betrayed their own kind because they wanted their own way instead of another. I believe betrayal is cruel, especially on your own kind which is considered a traitor, which has happened towards the end of each story.…
