-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The wisdom and pragmatic attitude structured in the classics aims for total positive health including physical, mental, spiritual well being while combating the illness. For this total positive health, Ayurveda has given three sub pillars- Ahara, Nidra and Brahmacarya, which support the body itself. Here Ahara has been enumerated first, which shows its credibility. i.e. The very basement for existence of all beings is nothing but AHARA. In taittareeya upanishad it says that,

-“Annena jaatani jeevanti , Annam brahmeti vyaajeenat” * He, who takes food in proper measure lives a long life and lives without any disease, gets strength and alertness of mind. However, his children are born healthy and without any deformity or disease. MAHABHARATA Same was quoted in Ayurveda also that the body as well as diseases are caused by food; wholesome and unwholesome food are responsible for happiness and misery. NEED OF STUDY

How come the Food be a medicine :
To eat less as medicine or 0 “Focus on Prevention” through the aid of food
Ācārya Lolimbarāja emphasis that the value of medicine declines unless the Pathya is followed. However, Pathya includes both Āhāra and Vihara, major part of that has been described as Āhāra. This too reveals the importance of Ahara. Pathya is a nutritive, curative diet preparation, could be termed as Nutriceuticals, which can be better termed as ‘Pathya’ or ‘Rasayana’.

* Ancient Indian Wisdom says that you are what you think and what you eat. Proper food will give proper health. So one should have such a diet, which is suitable for both sookshma and sthoola shareera. * In modern concept also, one should consume a balanced diet i.e,. the diet that contains sufficient amounts of fibers and various nutrients (carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals) to ensure good health. In other words, a balanced diet should be adequate as well as wholesome. * So the nitya sevaneeya dravyas which told in Ayurveda can be advocated as this balanced diet:

Sr. no. | As per Charaka| Can be correlated as|
1. | Sastika & Sali| Carbohydrates|
2. | Mudga| Protein|
3. | Saindhava| Salt|
4. | Amalaka| Vitamin|

6. | Rain water| Water|
7. | Milk| Protein, Fat, Sugar etc.|
8. | Ghee| Fat|
9. | Jangala mamsa| Protein|
10. | Madhu| Sugar|

* In addition, a balanced diet should provide other non-nutrients such as dietary fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals which bestow positive health benefits. Antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, riboflavin and selenium protect the human body from free radical damage. Other phytochemicals such as polyphenols, lysine, flavones, etc., also afford protection against oxidant damage. Spices like turmeric, ginger, cumin, garlic and cloves are rich in antioxidants. * And as per acharyas Charaka & Ayurveda rasayani teeka of Astanga hrudaya, nitya sevaniya aushadhi dravya is having Rasayana property or swasthyaanuvartana or...
