Session 1 Where Does The Money Come From? (Earning Income) Lesson Plan
Objectives: At the end of this lesson youth will be able to: • Relate human capital (work skills) to work • Define money earned as income • Differentiate between money received as income and money received as a gift • Identify ways to earn income

Background Information: People receive money in several ways. Earning money by working is a common one. When working, individuals use their work skills, talents, and abilities (human capital) in a productive way. Another way people receive money is through gifts. In many instances, the money given by the giver was income to him/her. This lesson focuses on the differences between the two sources of money and on human capital as it is related to work.

Supplies Needed: • $5.00 bills (play money) – one for each child • A large torch for class use with a flame “earning money” that will be attached at the end of the lesson. • Supplies to make individual torches for each child. • Copy of the story #1 “A Very Good Day” -- one for the large group or multiple copies if read in smaller groups • Flip chart or white board and markers • Strips of construction paper in 3 colors (approximately 3 strips of each color for each student)

Times were difficult in Habersham County. The skyrocketing prices of fuel and food were threatening to bankrupt the Johnson family’s small farm, which was no match for the multi-million-dollar mega-farms that had been popping up all over the southeast. Joseph, the family patriarch, was especially troubled by the farm’s financial circumstances. He knew that this year’s corn crop was his best chance to save the farm, and his distress was evident to his family as they sat around the dinner table.…

The documentary titled "Living On One Dollar” was an emotional piece that demonstrated how humans in impoverish countries manage to survive with very little income. What was amazing about the film, is the fact that these four college students named Zach, Chris, Sean, and Ryan just didn’t read facts and talk about the problems in our society, instead they gave the audience an first-view perspective, by placing themselves in the poverty-stricken country of Guatemala, as they attempted to live off one dollar a day for 56 days. The reason they decided to live off just a dollar a day is due to many residents being informally employed, therefore their pay is very unpredictable. Zach and Chris imitated this scenario by drawing a number of 0-9 from a hat each morning. In addition to managing off a small amount of money a day, they…

At the very beginning, I thought they aimed at checking my accounts monthly, so I recorded some income and expenses. Later, I gradually found that they did not check my account book at all. The wanted me to establish a stronger character on money so that a culture of proper management of money matters could be…
