“The age of Absolutism” marked some of the best works of the time in classic arts. The culture was exemplified with Drama and Grandeur and art was used to communicate religious and emotional themes, sometimes to the extent that the king ruled as the will of GOD, as in the case of King Louis XIV, he portrayed himself as the Sun King. The original meaning of "baroque" is "irregular pearl", a strikingly fitting characterization of the architecture of this period; later, the name came to be applied also to its music. Baroque music forms a major portion of the classical music canon, being widely studied, performed, and listened to. It is associated with composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Antonio Vivaldi, George Frideric Handel, and Johann Sebastian Bach. The baroque period saw the development of functional tonality.
Opera originated in Italy in the late sixteen century among a group of Florentine musicians and poets with aristocratic ties. Orfeo [1607], an Opera by great composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567 – 1643) united drama, dance, elaborate stage mechanisms, and painted scenery with music. As the thirty-year war slowed down, it allowed Opera to be spread from Italy to rest of the Europe.
