Aging and Disability Worksheet
Identify 2 or 3 issues faced by the aging population.

2. Commercials are portraying the aging population as helpless, and a burden of sorts to the younger generations (www.robinson.gsu.edu/magazine/aging.html) 3. Employers did not want to hire the aging population. They saw them as slow, and untrained. Thinking that the younger population would be willing to work faster and for less money. Some companies have been known to fire the older population so they do not have to keep paying them their high wages.

• What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society? Bing.com defined ageism as discrimination directed towards age. It is discrimination and prejudice against people of specific ages, especially in the workplace. Ageism is not mean prejudice or discrimination from the elder. “Ageism research has shown that women are likely to experience before 21 and over 40, while men will experience it under 18 and over 50.” (www.diversiton.com/ageism/agediversity.asp) According to www.robinson.gsu.edu someone turns the age of 50 every six seconds, around fifty five million people in the U.S. are over 55 years of age and 34 million are over 65 years old and that figure is likely to double by 2030.According to the 2010 census on www.census.gov, the percentage of 18-44 year olds (made up of both men and women) was 36.5%, and for those over the age of 65 was 13%. In 2000 18-44 year olds was at a percentage of 39.9%, and those over 65 was 12.4%.With numbers like this it means that different age groups are in about every setting. Churches are made up of different ages and so is the workplace.
