Wang et al. (2001) conducted a study, which found that African Americans were relatively unlikely to receive guideline-based care. Gaps in quality encompass the elderly and seriously mentally ill African Americans. Many African Americans in the study were frustrated by the narrow focus on medications among mental health professionals. The medication-centered focus of the clinician clashed with the focus of the participant (Carpenter- Song et al, 2010). Finally, rather than being viewed as a helpful resource, some African Americans felt “controlled” by their mental health providers (Carpenter-Song et al, 2010). Racism and discrimination have also been recognizable in the provision of medical care. They…

No other disorder arouses as much anxiety in the general public, the media, and doctors” (Picchioni & Murray, 91). The struggle for schizophrenic patients does not stop at their symptoms, but expands to the entire community because they are misunderstood and underrepresented. Schizophrenia remains one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose and treat. As a result, those left undiagnosed or left without treatment may be arrested simply for behaviors due to the illness itself.…
Providing mental health services that are both effective and culturally competent for Latino/a American clients has proved to be challenging. Understanding these challenges requires considering the issue from both a systematic level and from an individual level. At the systematic level, services for Latino/a American clients are affected by a lack of culturally competent clinicians as well as a lack of culturally sensitive assessment tools and interventions (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2001). At the individual level, there are a myriad of socio-cultural factors that warrant consideration such as limited financial resources, the fear of being stigmatized, or the general lack of awareness regarding mental health issues and services, to name a few (Vega et al., 2007; Vega & Lopez, 2001). These systematic and individual factors demonstrate the need to address these disparities in Latino/a American mental health services.…

I agree with the fact that minorities often get misdiagnosed more than the other races. I found it interesting that African Americans are four times more likely to develop schizophrenia. I wonder is this because they are being misdiagnosed or is this statistic accurate. Bias can play a major role in the misdiagnosis of the different races, and being bias really can cloud someone’s judgement. However, I don't agree that wealth plays an issue. You can have all the money in the world, but still get a doctor that doesn’t understand your culture. However, having money makes it easier to get better health care providers. The places that they take people in that are mentally ill, and provide them with medicine. I don't believe it’s the best top of…
African Americans, can also be referred as the Afro Americans or the Black Americans, are the residents and citizen of the Unites States who have their roots linked to at least the partial ancestry of the native population of Sub-Saharan Africa. They are also the direct descendants of enslaved Africans that were within the boundaries of the present day United States. Most of the African Americas are the descendants from West Africa, while others may also the immigrant from various regions of the west, including, Africa, Caribbean, South American or Central American Nations. In the United States, African Americans are considered the single biggest racial minority. The history…
As I observe my community, I tend to notice the disregard for mental health, in particular, in the Black community. Those in the Black community are just as likely to have any form of a mental-illness as their racial counterparts, however due to ambiguous reasons they are led astray from seeking help. Such as the stigma of being told “you're crazy” or “just deal with”. Based on the history of African- Americans or Blacks, we have been told to be strong and not weak. In the eyes of the Black community, mental illness has always been viewed as “White people issues” and never been taken seriously.…
“More specifically, African-American emerging adults could be adversely affected by cumulative vulnerabilities related to race, social positioning, age, and mental illness, which may further contribute to their being at particular risk for experiencing a poorer quality of life compared with the general population” (Williams, 2014, p.43). According to survey conducted from the San Diego County Adult and Older Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) system and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, African Americans were more likely to be incarcerated Compared with Whites, whereas incarceration was less for Latinos, Asians, and other racial-ethnic minority groups. Patients who received an adequate…
There is also the social influences and stigmas that are associated with the illness. Depending on one’s culture mental illness is not something that people seek treatment for. In the African American community, they tend to lean more towards faith and religion when dealing with mental health issues as oppose to seeking professional medical treatment (NAMI, n.d). Only about one-quarter of African Americans seek mental health care, compared to 40% of whites (NAMI n.d) Looking at the social-economic demographic 45 percent of homeless people have been diagnosed with having mental health related issues but because of their circumstance are unable to seek adequate…
A client's culture can contribute in a big way when it comes to personal bias and diagnosis. In the African American community specifically mental illness is a disease that is not discussed and something that you definitely do not go to see a doctor about. African Americans are presumably more affected by mental than any other culture does to reasonings such as ongoing racial discrimination, high poverty, and constant segregation(Clifton, D, 2015).Those in the African American community tend to rely heavily on religion in hopes to heal their ones. Also, the stigma that is associated with the disease also deters those who may be suffering from mental illness for fear of being shunned by family and those in the community. Also, lack of accessibility and affordability prolongs diagnosis to a point where health begins to deteriorate, causing mounting issues to the point where making some form of diagnosis difficult.…
