African American Reparation Research Paper
“Few groups in American history have suffered worse treatment than African Americans (Monroe p.152).” The only group of people that have arguably suffered worse treatment is the Native Americans and they receive reparations. This precedent is one of the main reason I believe African Americans that are descendants of slaves should receive reparations.
This would not be the first time reparations would be paid for government mistreatment of their people, “Germany paid nearly $60 billion to survivors of the Holocaust. In 1988, the United States agreed to pay $20,000 to more than 100,000 Japanese-Americans sent to an internment camp during World War II (Americans Debate Reparations for Slavery).” I believe any person of slave decent deserves reparations …show more content…
(Basic Statistics) Some would say the reason is because of slavery, when the slaves were first freed in 1863 they were released with no education, to pass down to future generations. African Americans have only had an equal education as whites since between 1955 and 1960, through the desegregation of schools from the result of Brown vs The Board Of Education ( BROWN V. BOARD: Timeline of School Integration in the U.S.). Therefore at the very least I believe descendants of African Americans deserve reparations in the form of a free college education. Some critics would ask “who is responsible for paying for these reparations?” I believe the American people responsible. For starters, although slavery ended 150 years ago segregation only ended 50 years ago with the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a time in which our grandparents and even some of our parents where alive, therefore this is not some far off event we are not responsible for.
