Just as the AP course positively impacted me, with the assistance of the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship, I know I can have the same impact on the University of Louisville community. At the University of Louisville, I hope to earn my degree in chemical engineering. I do understand that this degree requires a lot of knowledge about mathematics. Because I was able to overcome difficult academic situations in high schools, I know I am better prepared to deal with these challenges in college. Furthermore, my experiences of struggling in my AP courses have helped me become more sympathetic to my peers. If I see one of my peers struggling, I will provide assistance to them because I know how hard it is to ask for help. By working with my peers, we can ultimately develop a friendship inside and outside the classroom. By developing these relationships, we can learn from one another. While I cannot change my peers’ perspectives about certain issues, I can introduce them to a new perspective, my perspective. By introducing my peers to my perspective, I have helped them become more self-aware as they can do the same for me. In essence, by attending the University of Louisville, I know I can uphold the University’s mission by improving my peers’ lives by sharing my own lived experiences in classrooms. By sharing my narrative and experiences, I know I will create a more diverse…

I learned that dedication is an important characteristic in life. Ever since I was a young kid my dad has reminded me about how important character is and whether I knew it or not, he was right. A person's individual qualities explain who they are more than words can explain. Everyone has character whether it is good or bad. I have lived by the character quote "Our character is defined by what we do when we think no one is looking". I have lived for this quote every day of my life constantly striving to get better even if no one is watching. I have spent countless hours in the weight room making myself better than I was the day before. Through this, I have picked up many qualities such as self-discipline I am still learning more every day. One of my biggest qualities that I have learned is leadership when I became the team captain for our varsity football team. Leadership is something you can constantly be adapting to. For instance when in football practice I go by the motto "listen if you want to be heard". I have learned my other qualities such as respect, integrity, and courageousness. I plan to use my qualities at the UW-Wood campus to enrich the community and also improve me as a person. I am excited to further my education at the UW-Wood…

Initially, growing up being African has always been a problem for me, too many people has always perceived African people and their cultural ways as indifferent, but that’s not the case. The inane comments that I use to receive from my peers because of the way that I spoke, the music that I listen to, and my true identity as an African really made me love and embrace my African heritage even more. I was in the second grade and it was my first day of school in the United States and most people just ridicule me for being African, all because they didn’t understand my culture or because of their lack of knowledge still did not make it right for them to make a mockery of me or my culture. The jokes that people made really affected me as a person, I remember I had to go and present myself in front of the class and people are focusing more on my outer appearance as being African rather than trying to figure me out as a true person. Although most people perceive Africans to be different, people tend to think all because you’re African, you automatically have an African accent when you start speaking…

Over the years I have developed high levels of responsibility as a young adult, organization skills, motivated to learn, hard worker and easy to get along with, which I believe are some great qualities of my part. Some things about how I see my social behavior on campus would be quite simple. I am very much into sports and a very enthusiastic supporter. I do see myself supporting the University team every games and do my best to elaborate in other ways.
