Today, the influence of advertisement significantly affects society. In America, the average person views 20,000 commercials a year. Commercial advertismentss contain powerful messages that are directed to large audiences. Advertisement is one of the most expressive and informing means of communication in the mass media. The effects of advertisement are gender discrimination, roles, and socialization. In movies, and TV shows men occupy the high-status jobs that are respected in society. Males are represented as more prestigious and lucrative individuals compared to women. Men are most like to be the action heroes that America has grown familiar with. Society so deeply influenced by advertisement, gender messages are recruited and applied toward broader aspects of life such as the labor force. This results in discrimination toward women because people stereotype females as being inadequate. Sexism is still a problem today, event though society has begun to change and look more toward equal rights for both men and women. Today media has made large strives toward improvement, now and days there are stereotype-breaking shows like Power Puff Girls and Xena the Warrior Princess, these shows have female dominant roles that were once frowned upon. We may now have women in high-status jobs Another effect of advertisement would be identifying gender roles in society. The roles are the expected behaviors of both male and female. In television, boys are portrayed as aggressors while girls are displayed as cooperative and graceful. These roles can be found in most cartoons, like Popeye the Sailorman, Mickey Mouse, and many more of the classics these characteristics shape people’s views on how man and women should act. The gender qualities that advertisement influences are so strong that they can even play a role in parenting. These views limit each gender’s identity and the result is a deviant society.
