Advertising Controversy
The key factor and message surrounding multiple criticisms regarding advertising is, “social responsibility.” Multiple activists and critics feel that advertising is to blame for creating a society of materialistic, superficial people who have been deceived and manipulated by inaccurate, wasteful, and intrusive marketing ploys. These concerns along with several key ethical aspects of advertising have caused controversy regarding the statements made in adverts (truth in the message), the target audience (minors), and the type of products being marketed (O’Guinn et al, 2015).

For the longest time now, advertising has played a huge role in how we identify ourselves in the United States with the American culture, and how others identify themselves with all the cultures of the rest of the world as well. It guides us in making everyday decisions, such as what items we definitely need to invest our money on, how to dress in-vogue, and what mindset we should have to prosper the most. Although advertising does help make life easier for most, at the same time it has negative affects on the people of society as well. Advertisement discreetly manipulates the beliefs, morals, and values of our culture, and it does so in a way that most of the time we don’t even realize it’s happened. In order to reach our main goal of prospering as a nation, we need to become more aware of the damage that has already been caused by this advertising and prevent it from negatively affecting us even further.…

They use manipulative messages and deliver underlying promises to get us to buy their product. Advertisements reflect the political, economic, and social environment of their time. As consumers, it is important that we are able to deconstruct those advertisements and understand the underlying message that they are trying to send to us.…

Some advocates of advertising describe that ads boost our economy and encourage competition among business. Although this may be true, it is at the expense of our impressionable youth. One of the largest consumer markets in today’s society is that of teenagers. Nancy Day says that, “teens establish buying habits [that] will carry into adulthood” (Source D). With an increasing amount of purchasing power, teenagers have been targeted by businesses wanting to integrate their product into the teenager’s lives. Teenagers are also easily swayed—yet another reason why businesses attempt to attract teenagers. Advertisements negatively affect teenagers by presenting unrealistic situations and bad moral behavior. For example, teenage girls are influenced by stick-skinny models in magazines to have ultra-slim figures. This mind frame can cause unhealthy eating habits and disorders. Teenagers are also influenced to use alcohol and tobacco through advertisements. One cannot get through a commercial break on TV without seeing an advertisement for a brand of beer. Drinking alcohol is shown to be fun and therefore teenagers want to take part in whatever activity that is being shown. “Advertisers claim that it is up to the consumer to make moral decisions. The advertisers simply present their products” (Source F). However, it is the advertisers who “[spend] a great deal of time and money to study how best to attract and control consumers of…

Advertisements are used to gain attention through TV’s, social media sites, news papers and banners from potential customers by the respective organizations to increase the sales of the products or services sold. These advertisements use different themes to spark interest in the potential customer. However, some of the ads convey controversial messages leading to speculation that they promote immoral behavior while they spark interest in the potential customer (Newth, 2013). Such messages are not fit for the consumers because whatever the people engage in either builds or corrupts the society.…

Thesis Statement: Advertisements are allowing and affecting teens to start being independent buyers. I strongly believed that most ads are unethical because advertisements will say whatever teens want to hear in order for them to buy their products. Teens are also getting a lot of self-esteem problems and eating disorders because they’ve been trying to look like the models from the advertisements.…

Every day we are exposed to advertising, we drive down the highway and see billboards, we scroll down our news feed on Facebook and see side ads, and our favorite shows cut to commercials on television. According to Jean Kilbourne, advertising is an over 100 billion dollar a year industry and we are exposed to over 2000 ads a day. Advertisements don’t just sell us products, they sell images, values, and concepts of success, worth, love, sexuality, and normality. By doing so, they tell us what we should be. They set unrealistic standards, especially for women. The women in advertisements are more often than not young white women portrayed as beautiful housewives and sex objects, or in other words, these women are objectified. Advertisements should be critically analyzed because they are one of the main sources of influence for young people and what they teach may not be what is best for society.…

It is believed that advertising manipulates the society through the products of consumer culture, and promotes a false consciousness of needs that later on becomes a way of life. Pervasive advertising and consumer culture have caused a decline in the intellectual standards of U.S. popular culture. Peoples lives today involve little thought; most facts and ideas are fed to a person by the media. Often, misleading or untrue statements are passed through different ads, and only few are noticed or complained about. This system threatens the integrity of American democracy and ideology. This media-oriented society threatens to bring about an age of ignorance as we have never seen it before. The importance of the problem of consumerism cannot be understated.…

There is a major concern when it comes to ethical advertising in today’s society. First off not many understand what is and what is not ethical. Companies that use an advertising strategy must be honest, fair and consider taste and decency when deciding on their advertising idea. Advertising companies do a great job when it comes to being truthful due to many regulations. For the most part advertisements are also fair, but need to improve on being fair to children. Where there is major concern is with the taste and decency aspect of advertising. Companies must make a greater effort in improving their advertisements to be more tasteful, decent and socially responsible.…

It should be noted that the primary focus in this chapter is on social and economic aspects of advertising, as this is the promotional mix variable that is the subject of the most concern, controversy, and regulation.…

Dr. Raghbir Singh* Sandeep Vij** Abstract Depending upon the public opinion about the social, economic and ethical aspects of advertising, the marketers and the public policy makers should take different stances on how advertising should be treated. The study has analyzed in detail the public response to the issues like: ‘Targeting Children in Advertising’, ‘Use of Sex in Advertisements’, ‘Promotion of Materialism through Advertising’, ‘Use of Comparative Advertising’, ‘Ethics in Advertising’, ‘Use of Celebrities in Advertising’, ‘Economic Effects of Advertising’; and ‘Public Policy on Advertising’. The population for the study comprised a sample of 900 respondents, 100 each from the seven North Indian states (Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttranchal) plus Union Territory of Chandigarh and National Capital Territory of Delhi. Based upon the opinions and beliefs of the public, as revealed by the study, suggestions have been made to the advertisers and the public policy makers. Advertising has played a major role in consumer marketing, and has enabled companies to meet communication and other marketing objectives. Typically, advertising is used to inform, persuade, and remind consumers. It importantly reinforces their attitudes and perceptions. Advertising has been a target of criticism for decades. Advertising has been hailed as a capitalistic virtue, an engine of free market economy, and a promoter of consumer welfare. Its detractors on the other hand accuse it of an array of sins ranging from an economic waste to purveying of harmful products, from sexism to deceit and manipulation, from triviality to intellectual and moral pollution (Mittal, 1994). Advertising is seen by many as a threat to the cultural identity and self realisation of many developing countries: it brings to many people alien ethical values; it may deviate consumer…

With increased industrialization and various production machines, products that are available in the market are getting more numerous and diversified. In order to compete for a share of the consumer market, manufacturers are willing to spend vast amounts of money on advertising their products to attract the consumers. This may be an indication of economic growth. However, the keen competition has also led to many socially irresponsible advertisements as dry advertisements can no longer keep the products in the public eye. Socially irresponsible advertisements refer to the advertisements that have negative effects on our social values and norms. In such advertisements, misleading or fake information is employed to exploit people's emotions, rationality or even greed, so it is harmful to students if we publish this kind of advertisement on Sentinel. [The Bacardi Limon advertisement, for example, is obviously socially irresponsible and should not be published in our school magazine because it is not simply promoting liquor; it is guilty of promoting sexism, encouraging teenagers to drink, hiding the real effects of getting drunk ,so it is strongly recommended it not be published in Sentinel.]…

ProAdvertising has grown to be an industry worth many billions of dollars across the world. Almost all public space has some advertisements in sight and all forms of media, from newspapers to the Internet, are also filled with adverts. Whilst this helps companies sell their produces, and helps consumers to learn what is on offer, many believe that this huge amount of advertising can be harmful. It may make people want too much, or things that they cannot have, or it might make them feel inadequate when they don't have something. Research shows that children can be particularly open to these kinds of risk. Throughout the last 10 years levels of advertisements have raised to ridicules levels. Every ten minuets on T.V you see about four advertisements for cosmetics, fast food, and many other things. Throughout this debate I will discus how advertisements are directed towards gullible kids, stress that they can cause, and how it puts small businesses at a disadvantage.Report this…
