Advertising and Fosters Free Trade
Advertising has fierce critics as well as staunch advocates. Critics claim that advertisement is propaganda, while advocates counter that advertising fosters free trade and promotes prosperity. I believe advertising has both positive and negative effects. The United States as a country reflects how advertising affects us. While in some cases, yes, advertisement is great, there are some cases where it has destroyed lives. The promotion of cigarettes is a prime example of bad advertisement. “It promoted the continued social acceptability of smoking and encouraged the incorrect belief that the majority of people smoke.” (Shaw) The good cases of advertisement are when it’s used for teaching, because “at its most basic form advertising is teaching.” (Culpa) Everywhere around us there is advertising. Whether it is good or bad, it has an effect on us as a society. When teachers put up posters or even maps, they are advertisements; we just do not realize it. Advertisement has had some bad effects on our society as well. Advertisement “can reinforce racial, cultural, and sexual stereotypes. It can make us unsatisfied with who we are.” (Day) I fee; as if this is such a true and strong statement. I mean, how many people do you know that if they see something on television or saw their favorite celebrity wearing it, they automatically want it ten times more than if they had seen it in the store? Also how many times have you been watching television and saw a super model and just thought “if only I looked like her then everything would be perfect?” I know I have had those same exact thoughts before. And you think that every time you see that commercial, billboard, or poster. It just never goes away, and the same though just keeps getting hammered in your brain and you start to truly think you are worthless. All advertisement agencies try to use all available methods to obtain your attention so you will buy or use their products, even if the advertisement and product are

For the longest time now, advertising has played a huge role in how we identify ourselves in the United States with the American culture, and how others identify themselves with all the cultures of the rest of the world as well. It guides us in making everyday decisions, such as what items we definitely need to invest our money on, how to dress in-vogue, and what mindset we should have to prosper the most. Although advertising does help make life easier for most, at the same time it has negative affects on the people of society as well. Advertisement discreetly manipulates the beliefs, morals, and values of our culture, and it does so in a way that most of the time we don’t even realize it’s happened. In order to reach our main goal of prospering as a nation, we need to become more aware of the damage that has already been caused by this advertising and prevent it from negatively affecting us even further.…

The original definition of the word “advertising” does not look that bad. It is simply explained as “calling the attention of the public to a product or business.” However, the advertising companies usually abuse the real meaning of advertising and try to sell their product no matter what it takes to do so. It is very hard not to notice advertisement in today’s world. The commercials, the adds, the posters are everywhere; from TV, newspapers magazines and billboards to even a bus that is taking us to work everyday. Advertising companies know exactly how to get into our heads and how to convince us to buy their product instead of thousands of the different ones. No one can argue that advertising is influential, but there are a lot of critics and journalists that try to convince us to believe that it is not only harmless, but influential to us. One of them is John E. Calfee who in his essay “How Advertising Informs to Our Benefit” tries his hardest to prove that advertising has a positive impact on us. In his essay, Calfee gives very strong arguments supported by research and statistics, which unfortunately would probably convince an average American to agree with his ideas.…

Advertisements clearly play a huge role in society today; it seems as if there is a promotion for a new product around every corner. Advertising is how many companies are able to sustain their businesses and to gain more profits. However, some have criticized advertisements for their influence on people. The definition of advertising is outdated. It was previously, to endorse a product and praise goodness to induce the public to buy. They are now brainwashing consumers to buy their products using images to sell the product. The advertiser 's aim is to make the product look as good as it can through an attractive image. There are statistics, which I obtained from a Dolly Magazine, 16th May 2000, which proves that one out of four people in Australia buy a product because of the image shown in the advertisement…

In an article, Malcolm Gladwell stated, “We can try not to be swayed by advertising and marketing, But no matter what we do, we are all affected by attempts to manipulate our subconscious. Even when we believe we are immune to manipulation, we are not.” (2007). Advertising is accused of encouraging materialism and consumption, of stereotyping, of causing people to purchase items for which people have no need, of taking advantage of children, of manipulating people’s behavior, using sex to sell, and generally contributing to the downfall of our social system. There are many people who may assume that advertising is the most powerful and sustained system of propaganda in human history. Also advertising isn’t about informing consumers but fooling them into believing that consumption of commodities is the only means of attaining true happiness. Advertisements often contain both factual information and persuasive messages. (Wikipedia, 2008)…
