Adversity: A Short Story
When you were usually the most athletically talented girl in school, failure wasn't even a thought; until you start playing with the boys. I figured since I was stronger than all the girls maybe I could work out with the boys. We started to squat jump on an elevated platform. “Add another one, add another one” they said. Trying to keep up with them I started to add more. Until the one fatal moment when I jumped up and fell right on my butt. I wanted to curl up in a ball and cry but that would have just made me look soft. I mean the boys already looked at me like I was soft because I was a girl. I wanted to prove them wrong but for someone on top, that fall made it seem as if I had plummeted into the depths of the abyss.”I told you she couldn’t do it. Just face it girls can't jump as high as guys.” I thought to myself maybe they were right, who was I kidding they'll never respect me as an athlete. …show more content…
It was a familiar face but a stranger in my eyes. He helped me up and told me to try it again. He looked at me and talked about adversity. He told me that you have a choice, either let adversity affect you and give up now or respond to it and let it motivate you. I tried again. I accomplished it; I squat jumped seven blocks. The familiar stranger looked at me and said “you have heart”. Who would have thought that those three words would have impacted me so much. He saw something in me that no one else ever had.He inspired me and became my mentor, role model, and friend. His name is Jeremiah Brown and he changed my life

People often ask me, “do you play basketball or volleyball? Because you’re really tall.” As a six-foot-tall girl, I find that people are disappointed when I tell them “no, not anymore.” I was always told by coaches and parents that “you have potential,” but basketball, much to my dad’s dismay, was not for me. I found that I had the potential to do something with my life, to be someone bigger than myself. My freshman and sophomore years, I did not want to be involved in my school. Rather I wanted to get in and get out and go to college. But all that changed when I decided I wanted to be a Link Crew Leader, at the time I did not know what it meant to be a link leader, I just knew I wanted to be one.…

I have played soccer for fifteen years now, and when I first started, I used to play in a coed team. I was part of a team full of men and majority of the times, I was the only girl. Through out continuous games played and tournaments that I assisted to, I was always criticized. The boys would look at me with disgust as if a girl could not play the same sport that they played. I showed them with actions and sportsmanship that soccer was not just about boys, it was a sport that was meant to develop a person’s character. As far as I can recall, my dad has always made sure that I never forget my sex. He has neglected and isolated me since I was young. My brother would always get attention from him and I would be pushed off to the side. What I wanted and desired did not matter because I was girl, after all, girls did not matter as much, was what he believed. The authors, Toni Calasanti and Kathleen Slevin, of “Gender Social Inequalities and Aging” stated, “…women are “deviant” or even “inadequate” as the do not “measure up” (34). Their words are perfect examples of the way my own father thought of my strength and gender. Even when I tried joining the soccer team, he was the first to oppose and said “you’re crazy, stick to dolls and cleaning, soccer is for strong boys not weak girls”. I proved him wrong of course, but that never took away the awful image he had constructed in my…

Life is a series of choices. How one responds to challenges and adversity often shapes the person that they become. In my own personal experience, there have been many times where I have been forced to call into question a belief or idea. Challenging ideas and beliefs is an important aspect of moral and intellectual development. I recently experienced a key component of my development when I challenged an idea held by my school. The school imposed rules stating that in our school yearbook, shoulders, quotes, and superlatives would be removed. This removal sparked sudden controversy throughout the senior class. In order to develop a firmer grasp of the removal of these three yearbook components, my two best friends and I met with our yearbook advisor to discuss the issue. After…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed. On the contrary, I was determined to be successful because now I had someone special looking up at me as their role model.…

Why must this world have adversity? The world is suppose to be a happy, peaceful place. Life is a precious thing, and why must there be difficulties to ruin that? “Everyone is handed adversity in life. No one’s journey is easy. It’s how they handle it that makes people unique.” The quote just stated came from Kevin Conroy. These words are very truthful and real. This point is proven in both the novels Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom and Night by Elie Wiesel. These books each have their own themes of adversity, they each handle adversity in their own ways, and have similarities and differences concerning this topic.…

I cannot even begin to describe the hole that was left in my heart. My entire identity revolved around swimming and now that was gone. I had no idea what to do and what to think. The only conclusion I could come to at the time was it was my coach’s fault. Somehow, it was their fault I wasn’t on the team. That was my first failure. My fate was decided when I neglected to deal with my physical ailments. I left no choice for my coach; you can’t keep a cripple on a completive team. It was my fault and my fault alone. That realization hit me hard. It was unfathomable to think I was the one who destroyed this part of myself, but I did. That led to my second failure, failing…
