Foreign universities are going to enter in India. It is expected to pass out as another big bang non event for most of the
Indians. The likelihood of foreign universities creating their own campus with the facilities and qualities that they are having in US or Uk is highly unlikely. Ministry of Human
Resources has asked to deposit Rs. 50 crore if a foreign university wants to start its venture in India. The terms and conditions for foreign universities to operate in India would be similar to that which are already followed by private universities in India.
There are reports claiming that the academicians would be able to get higher salary. However, one shouldn’t forget that if foreign universities operate on the patterns of private university things would become macabre as most of the academicians would work on contract with low wages and insecure jobs. This is the truth of most of the private universities which are operating in India. Government is assuring that foreign universities would not be allowed to transfer their earnings from India to their home land. If this clause is implemented, it is highly unlikely that any sensible and quality educational institution from western world would like to operate in India. Most likely foreign universities might enter in India to create brand awareness rather than providing quality education.
Indian education system is based on providing opportunities to weaker sections of the society. Frankly speaking 80 percent of
India belongs to this section and Ministry of Human Resources must always have concern about SC, ST and OBC candidates. If these foreign universities operate in India on the pattern of private universities then these people who have been progressing with the aid of reservation system would once again be in the state of disadvantage, as these international institutions don’t like to compromise on quality of
