Leadership Styles in Advanced Practice Nursing
According to the leadership quiz I am a participative leader, which is the type of leadership that that takes into account the input of other group members, but the leader at the end still have the final decision (Lewin, n.d.). Participative leadership is a method of guiding people based on democratic values of inclusion (Spross & Hanson, 2009). Even when these changes are considered to be beneficial to advance practice nursing, we are aware that changes are in some instances painful, overwhelming and in certain sense chaotic, and any change holds components of loss (Spross, & Hanson 2009). In order to become an effective advanced practice nurse, there are a series of attributes that need to be incorporated their practice because today nurse leaders do not have the luxury of leading only in the nursing circles. They need to have a vision, they need to be capable of anticipating the future and transmit that image to others (Spross & Hanson, 2009). Nurse leaders need to have the ability of thinking outside the box, because innovation is about being creative and look for options that are not easy to visualize. The APN needs to be knowledgeable of the current trends and modalities and have great articulation skills, be able to get a point across effectively, and develop great listening skills in order to share the vision with energy and optimism. In addition the advanced practice nurse should have great sense of commitment, but able to balance their professional and personal life and always listen to their inner voice when about to make changes, and engage in self-reflection and self-awareness (Spross & Hanson, …show more content…
I am empowered by the unknown and I willing to take risks in order to reach a goal, and I embrace our cultural diversity because I believe we can learn from each culture. I enjoy mentoring and coaching people; I had the opportunity to perform these activities while I was working as a school nurse. I make my point across effectively and I believe that collaboration is essential in order to reach goals. I consider failure a learning experience, and I am committed to a lifelong learning experience and I am always looking for ways to balance my personal and professional life, since both are extremely important to
