Advanced Practice Nurse Essay
There are several advanced practice nurses in the United States. Advanced practice nurses consist of registered nurses who have a master’s degree or doctorate degree in nursing and specialize in a certain area. According to the textbook definition, “Advanced Practice Nursing is the patient-focused application of an expanded range of competencies to improve health outcomes for patients and populations is a specialized clinical area of the larger discipline of nursing” (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). Advance practice nurse roles include direct care roles such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives and indirect care roles such as nurse educators, nurse informaticists, nurse administrators, and nurse executives. These APN roles play a vital part in the future of healthcare. Understanding the role and scope of practice of an APN helps to show the similarity and help differentiate between each role and its specialty. This class has explained what it means and takes to practice as an advanced practice nurse. The three primary qualifications include earning a graduate degree with a concentration in an advanced practice nursing role and population focus, national certification at an advanced level, and a practice focused on patients and their families (Hamric et al., 2014). The APRN Consensus Model defines APRN as a nurse who meets the following criteria:
