For me, choosing to be a part of the nursing profession was not as easy as it may have been for others. I am not the daughter or granddaughter of a nurse. My mother was a single unemployed woman for most of my life. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I entered the workforce, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed familiar steps. For many years I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but responsibilities held me back. I realized while I may be very good at what I was doing, I was not following my heart.…

I believe one of the hardest aspects of being a nurse is having to deal with a patient’s death, especially if it’s unexpected, and you have grown close to them. Although I am not a nurse, I do know the pain of losing someone dear to me, just as every individual does. As a new nurse, of course, it would be difficult to handle a sudden and bloody patient death. As of right now I don’t know how I would handle it because I have not had to face such a situation. Dealing with a patient’s sudden death would be really emotional, but I would try to move on from the experience. I usually try to make light of a depressing situation. When I have issues or something on my mind, I talk to friends about how I am feeling. I think a way to get pass through…

I cannot believe it is senior year! Where did the time go? I remember my first day of ninth grade like it was yesterday. High school has flown by so quickly, it is crazy to think at the end of this school year I will be out of school. I will be the first person to graduate in my family since my grandma did fifty years ago. I have to start thinking about what I am going to major in during college and the type of career I would enjoy doing for the rest of my life, or until retirement. What should I do now? What do I need to do to get there at this point in time? For a few years now, I have been considering a career in neonatal nursing or a career in pediatric psychology. As of today, I think that a career as a neonatal nurse practitioner would be better suited for me.…

A nurse basically checks on the patient until the doctor comes to finds out what the problem and why. Nurses play significant roles in hospitals, clinics and private practices. They make up the biggest health care occupation in the United States. Nursing job duties include communicating between patients and doctors, caring for patients, administering medicine and supervising nurses' aides. This is basically what a nurse does everyday, but the advanced practice nurses can work independently and have additional job duties, such as prescribing medications, examining patients and making diagnoses. Nurses work for about eight hours a day so that would mean that they work thirty to forty hours a week. A normal/regular nurse needs to only have her…

Part of managing your nursing career is choosing goals for yourself; maybe you want to continue your education further. How far do you want your education to go? A nurse who wants to further their education needs to have time for their family, job, and other activities. Keep focused on what you may want to do while you are working and continuing your education. It certainly won’t be easy, and it will be exhausting. “To me the distinguishing characteristic of professional nursing is clinical thinking, every patient, whether well, getting sick, being sick or getting well has the right to a nurse who by virtue of this clinical thinking, manages the nursing care and is accountable for that care.” It would be a blessing to be a student of a prestigious program that was founded by the honorable late Ms. Dorothy M. Smith. Her aspiration and dedication to the program to feed and educate hungry minds is phenomenal. Being a former biology major, I was never enthusiastic as I am being a nursing major. Nurses are the glue that holds hospitals, clinics and nursing homes together. Desiring a Bachelor of Sciences in nursing, I plan to hold a position as a RN. Furthermore, I will continue my education to gain a doctorate in nursing. Attending University of Florida’s nursing program to achieve my career goals is a dream of an aspiring nurse. With the University of Florida’s academic standing, student involvement, comfortable environment and cheerful staff, being a part of the program is a beneficial plus. Entering college, my goal was to graduate with a Bachelor in biology and then attend medical school, to pursue a career as a pediatrician. However, a few complications arouse and that goal was short-lived. I am always told; never give up, on yourself and your dreams. Itching for the need to stay in the medical field, I decided on nursing. Deciding to get both my bachelors and masters rather than only my bachelor was the best decision I made. I decided on becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practioner. My career goal will not be achieved easily. It is a guaranteed package of gray hair, sweat, stress, gallons of Starbucks and dreams of my bed. I can be certain that I will be pushed to my limit to become the best nurse I am capable of being so that I am able to care for my patients the best way that I can. Previously having attended University of Florida, there was not a day I regretted saying yes to…

There are several advanced practice nurses in the United States. Advanced practice nurses consist of registered nurses who have a master’s degree or doctorate degree in nursing and specialize in a certain area. According to the textbook definition, “Advanced Practice Nursing is the patient-focused application of an expanded range of competencies to improve health outcomes for patients and populations is a specialized clinical area of the larger discipline of nursing” (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O’Grady, 2014). Advance practice nurse roles include direct care roles such as nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialist, certified registered nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives and indirect care roles such as nurse educators, nurse informaticists, nurse administrators, and nurse executives. These APN roles play a vital part in the future of healthcare. This class has explained what it means and takes to practice as an advanced practice nurse. This paper will compare and contrast roles of APN’s and explore regulatory rules and requirements for NPs in Mississippi. Core…

Transitioning from nursing school to working in the hospital can be challenging for a new graduate. As a result of the nursing shortage, new graduate nurses are being hired with little to no experience. This can be overwhelming for new nurses, especially when they lack support and proper training from their employers. The amount of stress, pressure and lack of training results to a high turnover rate for new graduate nurses. According to Shellenbarger & Robb, 13% of new RNs change jobs after only one year, further aggravating the nurse vacancy rate and leading to unnecessary hospital expenditure (Shellenbarger & Robb 2016). The question is, why are nurses leaving the profession after completing their education and obtaining a position working in the field? With growing demands of healthcare…
