“The Challenges of the Adult Learner”
Today many adults face unique challenges as an adult leaner while attending college. For example, am I too old to go back to school, keeping up with younger students, and can I balance work and family while in school are some of the few questions that adults learners ask themselves. As an adult leaner the challenges I have faced are balancing parenthood, job security, and extra-curricular activities.
Going back to school was a goal I always wanted to achieve. After eighteen years, I decided to go back to school and achieve this goal. As a single mother, I was thinking how I would balance going back to school and taking care of my family at the same time. My most concerns was would I have time for my family,

I work for a company that requires me to deal with a diversity of people of all walks of life. I have to listen to people problems, make solution, and attend workshops. As a single parent managing finances is can be stressful. The stress of trying to run a household, pay bills, and meet school financial obligation is challenging. As an adult learner it is hard for some employers to accept an employee returning back to school. There have been times I had to stay late at work and had to attend school also. Luckily I knew my instructor number. I would called and let my instructor know I would be late. Working full-time and been a full-time student is quite a challenging. There are times when I have stayed up for half of the night from studying to return to work the next day to perform day to day job duties. As an adult leaner you must know when to say yes or no to some activities. Going to an event, or out of town, or just procrastinating is not a good sign of discipline. As an adult learner we all must keep in mind that some things cannot be eliminated. Making sound judgment, being organized, and talking it over with others are some of the options you can do to help others understand what you are up against. This will give others a clear understanding and limitations on the decisions you make as an adult learner. Some of the extra-curricular activities that I have are a member on the PTA board, football booster club, and other varies activities I contribute time to.
