I want to be an educator to serve people. I care about the success of others, and want to help them succeed. Providing knowledge is one of the most important tools for success in life. With knowledge, we are able to pursue the many different avenues in life and careers. What motivates me to be an educator is for the moment. It is that moment where a student makes the connection, and completely understands the lesson I am teaching. Being an educator is one of the most important tasks, because we are providing children with a powerful resource, so they can have a future in something that sparks their interest. I want to be the person who helps motivate, encourage, and develop a child when that spark of interest has risen or a certain talent emerges. In society today, a child needs this encouragement to be successful and stay focused. Being a part of something important like the Education Field is crucial to my life’s fulfillment. I enjoy seeing the development of something new completely blossom to its fullest potential. This feeling is magnified even further when it comes to the education field. Watching someone develop educationally is not just a career to me, it is my motivation, and the adrenalized from the moment makes it all worthwhile.
Adult education is the teaching or training of adults. Education can take place in a variety of settings. As an adult educator, I may teach large classrooms of students at the college or university level, or small groups of adults in a corporate setting. I, as an educator, may even find myself working with students on an individual basis. An adult educator typically has some education and/or work experience in a specific field. A degree in adult education will build my education and work experience, qualifying me not only to work in a particular field, but also to teach skills in that field as well. Adult educators encourage and enable adults to further education. I think to pursue a major in this field; I should enjoy teaching, have strong interpersonal skills and work well with diverse populations.
I would like to become an Adult Educator because I possess all or most of the personal qualities necessary for working with young people. I think I could contribute a lot to young children, the community, and the field of Education. While there is no formula for what makes an excellent educator; these personality traits form the essential foundation for succeeding in the classroom as an instructor and as a leader. I realized how hard it would be to accomplish my dream, so I altered my dream and then saw what my parents were saying, and I realized education was the key to a successful future. Education can accomplish a successful future for adults by providing higher salaries, a better quality of life, and more opportunities in life.

To begin discussing adult learning I would like to first look at the teaching of children. The term pedagogy means the art and science of teaching children (Knowles, 1970). Pedagogy is based on a classroom, curriculum, and testing model; this style is the traditional style of child education and is based on the child being an empty vessel dependent on being filled with knowledge from others.…

Becoming a successful teacher has been a desire in my heart for many years. As a high school student, I had the desire to enter the medical field. The turning point toward a teaching career occurred when I became employed with a small preschool as the three-year old toddler instructor. This job was extremely rewarding. It thrilled my heart to watch these small children grasp new concepts and develop throughout the year. The smiles on their faces when they learned to zip their coat, or say their ABC’s, or count to 100 was worth all the challenges you faced with a classroom of three-year old toddlers. Being able to see the glow on a child’s face when they succeed is indescribable and one of the reasons I want an education degree so that I can witness this experience daily.…

My main reason for wanting to become a teacher is because I love children and I love working with them. Upon graduation from Boston College, I've had the opportunity of working in New York City public schools as a substitute teacher and at a privately owned nursery school in the Bronx as a part-time instructor. My experiences have been very rewarding thus far and have inspired me to want to continue along this path and seek further knowledge in the field. I can't even begin to describe the joyous feeling of knowing that I've touched the lives of the kids-- it is truly priceless. When kids pass tests, when kids say, "I get it," when kids come in and say, "Thanks. You're the best teacher I ever had," or "will we have you again" that means a lot. They make me laugh, they give me hugs, they cheer for my presence, they are observant, and most of them just need a little push. They give me nicknames, they miss me when I'm gone, they try so hard to do what I ask so much of the time. The most amazing feeling of all though is when the kids tell me they want to be just like me and teach just like me and are able to go in front of the class and teach others what I have just taught them. I have finally discovered what I am truly passionate about and am pursuing this passion by continuing my education so that I am able to fulfill my goal of being the best that anyone possible could be. This is what has driven me to want to go to Mercy and continue my education to become a teacher.…

The changes in adult education began largely in the 1920’s with the publication of two seminal books; Edward Thorndike’s Adult Learning (1928) and Eduard C. Lindeman’s The Meaning of Adult Education (1926). These books introduced a whole new concept of learning and became the impetus for change in the methods used to teach adults.(Clark, 1995) Adult learners benefitted from these changes because they were not a “clean slate” per se. They brought their own ideas and preconceptions, which were developed through their adolescent education and their adult life experiences. The essence of learning was captured by Lindeman:…
