We all think about it from time to time. Have we lived a good life, and how are we going to die? In the book we first meet two 17 year old boys named Matt and John. They are down at Montauk, which is a beach town on the east coast, working to earn a little extra cash so they can hopefully go to college. While they are out selling ice cream one day Matt meets a very beautiful girl named Driana, who is with her two friends JoJo and Stef. The two boys get invited to Driana’s house where they have a party. Sometime during the party, Stef goes out night surfing. This lead to Matt, John, JoJo, and Driana borrow her neighbor’s boat and go looking for her. Once they went out on the water that was the last time they saw land for fifteen days. They were motivated by the fear of death that they did not want to die out on the sea. Though it probably did pass through their minds every day that they could and would die if they did not try to fight and survive. John, though harsh and mean at times, was probably the smartest, and more aware of the situation. He realized all the possibilities of their present situation. Likewise Matt accepted it too, even at times when he didn’t want to he did realize the extent of their problem. Driana was the most hopeful of them, and though didn’t agree with John probably realized what could happen
