Admissions Essay / Advertising

The world is changing so are we. Our borders come closer, our cultures coexist, and our lives intertwine. More knowledge opens us more doors. We can no longer allow ourselves to be ignorant about how others live or work, because in order to correctly form an opinion on a subject or critique one’s work or decide on a product, we must first fully comprehend it. The best tool we have to present and promote a work or a product to the masses is advertising; an intriguing, ever-evolving, and universal profession.

Whether it is printed, broadcasted, or online, it is intriguing to see how people and firms choose to portray themselves and their products. Also it’s fascinating to see how some of the ad agencies come up with the cleverest solutions for the given problems in consideration with the various needs of the society and the environment. Since studying at The Art Institute I began to see the world around me with a more educated and critical eye. I often find myself thinking “I would have done this differently.” in particular for poorly executed ideas in advertising. I know that different people may have different ways to communicate the same message. However, because people dedicate less and less time to watch/see/read, or to learn and get informed in general effective advertising should be clear, truthful, witty, intelligent, and memorable.

Soon after I started to study graphic design I realized that I needed to learn much more than that in order to get ahead in my path. I loved and enjoyed graphic design a lot. However it was just part of a bigger picture along with photography, another discipline I’m passionate about. The reason advertising attracts me more than graphic design is that it will allow me to both express myself creatively and communicate assigned messages with a broader knowledge of communication and marketing. As long as people’s need to pick and choose between products or services stands so will advertising. Thus, advertising may change form or medium, but it will never disappear like some professions do. On the contrary, it will evolve and expand with the needs of the society and adapt to the unstoppable technologic developments.

Today, thanks to the internet, and media it is possible to reach to the masses, learn about people and places we may otherwise never come across. Between art communities, social networks, bidding sites, blogs, and personal and corporate websites, we all write, design, blog, buy and “digg” everyday. In other words we create, communicate and share or sell our works, which I believe are the core concepts of advertising. This kind of exposure and interaction also drives us to produce more considerate, respectful, trustworthy, and universal works.

Studying advertising will allow me to look at creativity and design process from a wider and more complete perspective. With an open mind and relentless curiosity advertising is the major I’m eager to explore.

Advertising is a deeply pervasive part of all lives lived in consumerist economies. The average individual in Western society is bombarded with several hundred adverts per day -- billboards, TV commercials, film trailers and product placement in films, Internet ads, radio blurbs, newspaper and magazine ads, and more. Advertising both is a kind or popular culture, and it is a major way that we learn about and learn how to interpret other kinds of popular culture. Film trailers, for instance, not only seek to sell their cinematic product, but they also hope to shape the way we think about the movie. Advertising is a major mode of socialization, telling us how to think and feel (what's hip, what's sexy, what's normal), and what problems we need to worry about (lack of the latest e-gadget, insufficiently white teeth, mammary magnitude, etc.).…

For the longest time now, advertising has played a huge role in how we identify ourselves in the United States with the American culture, and how others identify themselves with all the cultures of the rest of the world as well. It guides us in making everyday decisions, such as what items we definitely need to invest our money on, how to dress in-vogue, and what mindset we should have to prosper the most. Although advertising does help make life easier for most, at the same time it has negative affects on the people of society as well. Advertisement discreetly manipulates the beliefs, morals, and values of our culture, and it does so in a way that most of the time we don’t even realize it’s happened. In order to reach our main goal of prospering as a nation, we need to become more aware of the damage that has already been caused by this advertising and prevent it from negatively affecting us even further.…

Advertising has been around for many years, and is exposed to the public in many different forms such as television, newspapers, magazines, and the internet. All advertisements are an attempt to persuade an audience. The experts that are in charge of creating the ads know exactly what the consumer needs to see to convince him or her to buy the product. These experts use three appeals that help make their ads pleasing and interesting to consumers. These appeals are called Ethos, Pathos, and Logos, and help make the ad seem realistic and attainable when, in actuality, this is usually not the case. The ad for “Olay Complete Moisturizer” is just the same as most—not one hundred percent true.…
