The most important activity to me outside of school is my outreach program. This outreach program has been my rock and guide through high school. This program is designed to help under-represented high school students achieve their goals. This program helps students become successful and responsible through personal and academic enrichment, and I am one of those students. A lot of the focus is put on school and the main goal of getting into a good university. Even though it is much focused on school we also focus on the community and the environment. We do a variety of community service projects a month and even during the summer we are still doing community service. Two of the things we do very frequently is replant mangroves and beach clean-ups. Yes, school is important but this outreach program also teaches me that so is our community and our environment. This outreach program is so important to me because it has helped shape the type of person and student I am today. Before this program I didn’t care much about school but after going through some adversities and being in outreach my mindset changed. Outreach isn’t just a organization it’s a family and this family has been my support system all throughout high school. I personally felt like the outreach family was there for me even when my parents weren’t. This program has encouraged and given me tough love when it was needed. Being in outreach has pushed me to achieve goals that I never thought I could achieve. In the last four years I have learned a great amount of things about myself, life, the world, and how important my education is. I have learned a great sense of responsibility, ownership, and morals in outreach. The program has taught me to strive for personal and academic success. The biggest thing I have learned is that it is okay to ask for help. It doesn’t make me look weak to ask for help, it makes me stronger.

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

The components of citizenship, community service, academics, work and home life, and extracurricular actives help me shine as a well-rounded individual. As an involved and caring citizen in the Union Township community, I do my best to make my mark. Displaying a good role as a citizen through community service has been a value I possessed ever since I could remember. At a young age, I started to serve my community with my parents at both school and church events and it has stuck with me since. Through community service such as being an assistant teacher in St. Veronica’s Religious Education Program, Glen Este High School’s member of National Honors Society, and Key Club, I not only helped out Union Township but I have also made new relationships and feel good about myself. Community service always makes me feel better because I know I’m helping others and making my mark through the friends I have made through both of these service programs.…

Not only did I feel proud for making interdisciplinary connections when explaining things, but I was also able to support my friends. My peers would walk into math tutoring completely clueless, but would walk out offering to teach others the material. The excited yells of kids who received As on tests for the first time was worth more than anything else I could’ve done in my free time. Beyond that, I realized support is a universal need. By believing in my peers’ ability, I helped them overcome hurdles that had been there for a long time. Most of all, contributing to the community wasn’t about the hours I put into it, but rather the effects that my service had. My actions can protect the future from the chaos of potentiality.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

From this activity I have learn that just attending university and receiving grades is not all that is required to attaining a future with a pleasant job. Volunteering and work experience are also necessary, therefore, I would consider joining a volunteer or work opportunity while attending university. The next step I am going to take toward my preferred future is to obtain a job, I will do this by applying to jobs that require communicating with people, working with children or opportunity for networking. Another step that I can take is to volunteer at my old high school, I have already worked at an elementary school, and therefore it would be nice to see if I would have a similar or dissimilar experience at the high…

Although, at times, I become more stressed with the extra demands of my club activities, the fruitful results allow me to relax as my efforts become tangible. Throughout my college years, three activities have surrounded my life: school, church, and service-learning. When in school, I would always try my best to understand what I was supposed to learn, even if it was hard at times. My focus was school, which was also the focus of every other student in the Honors College. When someone needed help in their studies, I would offer it, especially if it had to do with English (my forte). In church, I always did my best to fulfill my callings, whether it'd be helping out the youth during camps, teaching classes, or setting up appointments between the bishop and members of the congregation. Regarding service-learning, I was always willing to help out. When possible, I would attend the different events that were meant to help out the community, whether it was a big event like Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service or simply by helping a neighbor move from one house to another. This is what has composed my college career.…
